Please help me choose a pump!

Hi! Thanks in advance for your help!

I will try to keep this short and sweet, I am due with 2.0 in a few weeks and this time insurance will cover a double electric pump (last time the covered nothing). I bf DD for nearly 18 months and would like to do the same this time.

Last time I had a Lactina and worked full time, the Lactina is currently being used by my sister so it's not an option. I can get a Medela PISA, for $0, or get it with the tote or backpack for $75 mu other option is the freestyle for $125. I would like to reuse as much as possible from last time but also get the best pump to meet my needs. I will be SAH this time so I shouldn't need to pump as much as I did last time.

I just don't know if it is worth the $125 for the hands free option (I feel like I'm leaning towards the totally free PISA or the freestyle) which would be closest to the Lactina?

Thanks again!

Re: Please help me choose a pump!

  • I have never used a Freestyle, but I've used both the PISA and the Lactina.  The Lactina was a beast, and the lowest suction was too high for me.  On the PISA, I use it at ~1/3 of max. (Unless it's plugged into the battery, which makes it not work as well and I had to turn the suction way up).

Any of those pumps are compatible with the bottles and pump parts for the Lactina.
I never had issues with the Lactina being too high, do you think that the PISA has good suction? I'm not planning on pumping a ton but I want it to work and can't seem to figure out which of the options available to me are closest to what I've used before.

  • I would go with the totally free PISA.  This is the pump I have, never had a problem, suction is fine.  Since you're going to be staying at home, your need for a pump is probably not that high, I'm assuming?  In that case, I'd go with the free one!

  • FTM here who has only used the PISA, but I have had great results with it. Like PP I use it at about 1/3 suction and can pump all I need in about 8-10 minutes.

  • Perfect! Thank you all, the only thing that made me consider the freestyle is that I'm not as 'tied down' which could be helpful with 2u2. I am hopeful that I won't need to pump super often as I won't be working 60+ hours a week this time.

  • I have been using the PISA since DD was born and I really like it. It has enough suction for me and I pump hands free with it as well. It's a trick I learned on my BMB, January '14. I wear a cami everyday, unhook my nursing bra, rest the flanges inside the cups and hold them in place until after I push the let down button. I needed a way to decrease the time it took me to pump when I was still working in an office and that worked beautifully.
