Vent NPR

I took off work yesterday to see my classroom and to do some major house hunting. It's about three hours away.  We called a realtor several weeks in advance to set up houses for us to look at. We sat up the appointment for 2:00 yesterday. We told her which ones we really liked. Our favorite was one that said you needed to give them advance notice so they could make arrangements for their dog.

Yesterday morning around 9:30 she called to ask if we were going to look at houses this week. We responded we have an appointment with you today at 2. She responded: oh, I guess I should schedule some houses. When we met with her she only had two houses for us to see and neither was the house we wanted to see, because they didn't have enough notice.  While looking at the houses she kept taking phone calls. On the way to our second house we drove past a house on our list. We asked her why we couldn't see that one, so she called and got us in. If all she needed to do was make a call to get us in, why was this one not scheduled. This tells us she didn't even try to get houses set up for us. Then she had the nerve to say if you wanted to see more houses you should have set up an appointment. I wish my husband and I were more confrontational because I wanted to say something so bad to her. Thanks for listening to my long vent.

  • I agree with PP - I would get a new realtor. We recently purchased a house and our realtor was amazing; never missed appointments, always set up houses we requested in addition to others she had found.

  • I'd look for a new realtor at this point, if you can. While taking phone calls isn't something I'd get upset about, forgetting the appointment you did have, not scheduling houses, and then chiding you about it is over the top unprofessional.

  • Agree with everyone above, and by all means, don't be afraid to stand up for yourself.  As a first time buyer who just went through the home purchasing process, it can be overwhelming, but I learned you HAVE to demand good service from your realtor and mortgage lender.  As @flutterbuggie said, they work for you!

  • Get a new realtor now. I had a friend who stuck with a lousy realtor and the situation just went from bad to worse. The realtor should be working for you!

You need another realtor!  ASAP!  You need someone who is going to be super responsive.  When we saw our house for the first time, our realtor was on vacation - he arranged for his colleague to show us the house ASAP, and our realtor worked like crazy during his family vacation to make sure our offer was competitive and was put in and accepted.  That's the type of realtor you need.  If this woman can't set up appointments, she's going to be terrible and getting a deal to go through.  You don't want to lose out on houses because of your realtor.

  • Not only is she working for you, but she stands to make a ton of money from you! If she's not working for it then someone else would be happy to make that money!

When we bought our first house, our first realtor dicked us around for months. She wanted us to find the houses and she would just show them to us. Which is fine, but she needed to do her job too. We sent her a big list of houses we wanted to see and we didn't hear back. So we found a new realtor. It sounds like you need to as well. You know what our first realtor did when she found out we bought a house through someone else? She had the nerve to call and ask why we did t go through her. So just be prepared for something like that.
  • oh hell no. we bought a house last october and that process is so exhausting and stressful. you need a realtor who will work for you and be ontop of their shit. especially since it's three hours away! i'd be fuming. i hope you find a new realtor asap.

  • Definitely get a new realtor.  She sounds like she is not respectful of your time.  AND you drove 3 hours for your appointment - she should definitely be respectful of that.

I think the house buying process is so stressful, you don't want to go through it with someone who sucks a bag of dicks.

  • Nope. Just no. Find another realtor. I wouldn't have been able to hold my tongue and she would have known exactly what I thoght of her if I were in your shoes. I am so sorry you had to deal with that. Ugh.

My new job gave me the name of a new realtor so we are going to try to contact her. We just won't be both able to be back in town for another month.

  • That totally sucks.  I'm glad you're getting a new realtor. I would not hesitate to send her an email telling her you will no longer require her services and exactly why.  She's going to make somewhere around 3% commission and should do her job.

When we bought our house, we went out SO MANY times.  And our realtor would stop if he saw houses that weren't on our list but might be in a desirable area and confirm with us whether or not we wanted to try to get in to the house.  We were often given access with no problem.
