Container Gardens

I know some of you ladies are amazing gardeners. I don't have a yard, but I'm hoping to grow some veggies in containers. I did it a few years ago and just cleaned out the containers today and got inspired again.

There is a local farm that does a seedling sale every year and it's this coming weekend. Last time, I got all my plants as seedlings and did tomatoes, cucumbers, peas, beans, spinach, and zucchini. They grew okay, but it was expensive to get them as seedlings.

So, what veggies do you think would grow best in containers and do you think there are any that I can do as seeds starting now to save some money?

Re: Container Gardens

  • I usually do herbs in containers (we have a good sized garden) but I have done tomatoes,m celery, onions, and peppers in pots before and they grew well. Depending on your location starting those from seeds now could be hard as most tomatoes have like a 130 day to bloom time period.

Lowes did have their starter packs on sale this weekend though (could still be going on) for 2 for $5.00 and they are usually have 2-5 inches of growth.

Onions and celery grow well in containers too and you just need the old roots to start them out so they are in essence free.

Zucchini can be grown from seed pretty quickly--I just planted mine this weekend in upstate NY, and I usually have more squash than I can eat by mid-August.  Spinach, beans, and peas also do well from seed this time of year.  I agree with the other posters that it's probably too late for tomatoes from seed unless you have a very long growing season where you live.  Other easy plants to start outdoors from seeds are chard, beets, kale, radishes, and broccoli.  Chard is probably the easiest of those to grow in containers, but any of them work if your containers are large enough.
