Question for those that have had 2+ pregnancies

Obviously that's a LOT of you I know.  We will be TTC in the next year and I'm still anxious about it because I'm so afraid it will be the exact same pregnancy as the first one with DD.  I literally had every pregnancy symptom and was sick for 8 months straight, but I still somehow gained way more weight than normal.  I got so much anxiety/depression from pregnancy and had to be on zoloft.  We want another kid, but DH thinks I've worked myself up over all this and there is no way the next pregnancy will be the same.  I know I shouldn't complain about it but it did change up my life, I had to scale way back on work hours and was even home bound for 1 month.

I was hoping you guys can shed some light to the kinds of different pregnancies you had.  There are a couple things different about my lifestyle now.  I am 13 pounds less than my pre pregnancy size, I practice yoga on a regular basis and watch what I eat.

Re: Question for those that have had 2+ pregnancies

  • With my first I could have been on the show, "I didn't know I was pregnant" Other than a growing tummy and missed period I had next to no symptoms.  In fact I remember my MW telling me she didn't like to hear about women feeling as good as I did.  With my second my pregnancy was a bit harder, I had queasiness for about 8w, felt more tired and run down overall, but nothing too, too, bad.

L & D was infinitely easier the second time, recovery was a breeze, BFing was second nature and overall I felt more confident as a mother and less weapy in those early days.  Not sure if that helps...

I would love to have your first pregnancy :)  I had a c/section with DD after pushing for 3.5 hours with no progress because of her big head.  I'd like to think that if I had a more "pleasurable" pregnancy next time around I would try for a vbac.  Of course the hospital I had DD at doesn't do vbacs, but I could probably find another hospital that does.

  • Both of my pregnancies were a lot alike - except I had one baby the first time and two babies the second - haha! But I didn't have any morning sickness either time and got swollen toward the end. Pretty uneventful.

Pretty much everything was different about my pregnancies.  I was much more active with my second pregnancy.  I gained about the same amount of weight, but I felt heavier the second time. Most of my friends say their pregnancies were all very different as well.
This is what I'm most scared about.  I actually gained 76 lbs with DD, half of which was water weight.  Lord help me if that happens again.  My next door neighbor said it would.  Talking to counselors will help too I think.  Also, telling myself its just temporary (9 months) might help me keep it real.

My experience was similar. The first pregnancy was a breeze. I think I was sick once or twice. I was tired all the time, but nothing terrible. My second was tougher, much more morning sickness. My second labor was a breeze though. I don't think I even broke a sweat and I certainly didn't look like I just had a baby. DD2 was a full pound lighter than DD1 though. My third pregnancy was the worst, but I attribute that to trying to be super mom to the other two all the time. If I had rested more, maybe I wouldn't have been so miserable. I will say though, my sex drive with my third was craaaaazy. :)

All three pregnancies have been different.  I was the most stressed out with my first and gained themost weight.  My 2nd was much more relaxed and had a few horrible morning sickness days, but otherwise not too bad.  This time, I'm still at my starting weight and have food aversions to almost everything.

  • My first pregnancy was difficult.  I had problems with bleeding fro 5 weeks -20 weeks.  I found out the baby had a heart defect, I had gestational diabetes and she was born at 32 weeks when we found out she had other birth defects.  She eventually did pass away.

However my second and third pregnancies we similar and very normal.   Normal weight gain, normal appetite, no gestational diabetes and pretty much no sickness although I was a bit more tired with the third pregnancy.
  • #1 - queasy off and on for about 2 months. Felt good otherwise. Bed rest at 6 months. Gained 60 lbs. Induced at 42 weeks. 36 hours labour, 3 hours pushing. Painful recovery. 8 weeks for stitches to heal. Lost most of the weight withing 3 weeks.

#2 - exhausted all the time. Mild morning sickness first 3-4 months. No bed rest but I stopped working at 7 months. Gained 40 lbs. Natural start to labour at 41 weeks. 5 hours labour, 10 minutes pushing. Recovery much better. Stitches healed at 2 weeks. Still had 1/2 the weight at 6 months pp.

#3 - If I hadn't done a test because I was nauseous one day (ONE day) I wouldn't have known I was pregnant until 6+ months. (No nausea, no weight gain, no waistline expansion, no feelings of movement, no tiredness). Gained 20 lbs in the last 2.5 months. Induced at 39 weeks. I worked until 38 weeks. 3 hours labour, 2 minutes pushing. 3 weeks for stitches to heal. Lost all the weight in 3 weeks. Lost another 5 the following week. I felt the best after the 3rd one.
I'd have another, but I'm 41, with 2u2, so NO. Lol.
  • Mine have all been pretty much the same.  Might have been different cravings or different ways I carried them but pretty much the same.  The only real difference I noticed was that pregnancy number #3 was way easier physically because I was in shape and not overweight to begin with.  They are all hard mentally in their own ways.
  • Both my pregnancies were pretty much the same. I'd say #2 was worse because I just had more to do with DS1 running around. My morning sickness was definitely worse with Ds2 and I gained more weight but recovery was the same. Breastfeeding was easier with ds2 though.

I was ridiculously swollen with DD & it started early. In total, I gained over 80 lbs, about 65 lbs of that was water (I peed a lot those first 3 days). I drank tons of water & did all the "tricks" that we're supposed to help & nothing did except delivery. Add to that bilateral carpal tunnel, pregnancy rhinitis, and other lovelies, I was pretty apprehensive about going through that again. My current pregnancy (32 wks, 4 days now) was a surprise & is completely different. I've gained 20 lbs with very limited swelling. I can still wear all of my shoes & rings! It's pretty much the polar opposite of the first pregnancy. Don't listen to your neighbor, there's no way to know what will happen. You just have to take care of yourself the best you can with what your body does.
    This is comforting :)

  • Sadly, both my pregnancies were 9 months of moderate nausea every single day, 24 hours a day. I really hoped it would be different with #2 but I felt just as bad. With #2 I was more willing to take meds for the nausea and got a little relief (less vomiting) by taking Unisom every night. Zofran didn't do much and the side effects were bad for me. I also napped every afternoon during my 2nd pregnancy while DS1 napped, that helped with the fatigue.

L&D was similar with both, water breaking was my first labor sign. With #1 I needed Pitocin, didn't with #2. Recovery has been a little easier with #2. Fortunately I had great, "easy" labors--supposedly the harder the pregnancy, the easier labor is and that was true for me. I actually loved being in labor both times because I knew the suffering was almost over!

  • My first pregnancy was awful. I was on bedrest with preterm labor and high BP for 8 weeks. I am convinced being on my feet chasing after a surgeon all day, not getting a lunch break, and working 50 hour weeks did me in.

My 2nd and 3rd pregnancies were SO SO much better. I was a SAHM by then, so life was more relaxed. It sounds like that could be the case for you too?
