Chiropractor: How Often? *Updated*

I'm going to see a chiropractor for hip problems. I've had hip/spine issues for several years, following an injury, so I'm thinking this will be a reoccurring thing with me through this pregnancy.

I saw a chiropractor a few times last year but haven't ever gone regularly. The place I'm going offers discount packages - you pay for the initial exam/adjustment and then several more adjustments. They have different packages that include different amounts of adjustments. My question is, for those of you that go "regularly", how often is that? Every other week? Once a month? I don't want to buy a huge package that will take me forever to use. Thanks!

Update:
Oh man, ladies, I just gone done and I could have kissed him it felt so good! I'm going twice a week for 3 weeks then we'll reevaluate at that point. I bought a 12 adjustment package and plan to use it all before this little girl comes out. Hopefully my new insurance will cover some chiropractic care, but if not it's money well spent.

  • Okay, full disclosure I have never been to a chiro, but for some reason I am thinking weekly adjustments wouldn't be a crazy idea while pregnant, even without your prior hip/back problems. Especially if the chiro is experienced with working with pregnant women to get the baby into optimal position for delivery/etc as you get close to the end, I would think you could use the crap out of a package of chiro visits while pregnant.

  • I've been seeing a chiropractor for a decade now so I go every three weeks as part of a maintenance schedule.
Frequency of visits really depends on which style of chiropractic the doctor practices.

  • I go every two-three weeks. I've been going for 3 years, so it's routine. Before getting pregnant I was going monthly for maintenance. I did go weekly for a time around 22 weeks because I was having awful hip pain, but then once that was under control I went to 2-3 weeks. It was suggested that later on I should go weekly (the last month of pregnancy). I think it's really helped with pain and feeling great!
  • Right now I go weekly, after baby it will move to once a month.

  • I go once every two weeks or more frequently if I'm uncomfortable. In the beginning, they may have you come more frequently to get you aligned and help your muscles remember working the correct way... love me some chiropractic care!

I've been going every 3 weeks since I got pregnant. After today, I'll go every 2, then the last 8 weeks, I'll go weekly as needed.

  • I have been going every two weeks unless I have a headache, then I'll schedule sooner.  It really does depend on the severity of your issues.  Like PPs have said, sometimes you have to go more at the beginning and then the appointments get more spaced out.

Does your insurance cover any chiropractic care?
Unfortunately my current insurance does not, but I'll be changing insurances in July and I'm not sure if the new insurance (through employer) covers it or not. Thankfully I have a decent amount of money left in a health savings account from my previous employer, so I'm going to use that for now.

Thanks for all the input, ladies!

I'm going weekly since I have been expecting even with adjustments I dont find relief. Baby is on my left side, annoying my left SI joint. Both hips and shoulder blades are out of whack every since. Sometimes I can go 2 weeks without visiting the chiropractor but its horrible muscle pain to the touch.
  • I am a chiropractor and it really does depend on your issues and how long the problem has been there and many other factors as far as what is recommended. ON AVERAGE I start a patient 3x/week how long they stay at this frequency again depends on them. There are some cases I see 6x/week so it really can vary. Once you are in maintenance (while pregnant) 1x/ week is probably what will be best for you. I myself get adjusted 1-2x/week now that I am pregnant and will continue for a bit after baby because you body will go through more changes once baby comes. You will be using new muscles (holding/nursing) and different positions that your body isn't used to. At some point most people do very well with 1-2x/month.

  • I go once or twice a week, and have been doing so for the past two years. My insurance is pretty generous about it.

Quick related question: my chiropractors still use the Stim machine on my shoulders and swear to me that it's safe for pregnancy. I can't help but feel uneasy about it. Is it ok? Do you others still use it?

I go every 2-3 weeks. I plan to go a bit more frequently - at least every other week - starting around 30 weeks or so.

stim machine across your shoulders is completely safe ... stim machine across your low back or your belly completely not safe. As long as they keep it on your shoulders you are just fine. The only effect (affect) those machines have are between the 4 pads. It is not a systemic affect (effect ... I never know which spelling)

  • I just started going and go 3x/week for back and rib pain. Insurance doesn't cover but it's worth it because the pain is debilitating. Hoping it can drop to once or twice per week.
  • I only go every 3-5 weeks.
