28 week growth scan?

Does anyone else have to have a growth scan around now? My doctor wants me to get one just because I'm hypothyroid. My uterus is measuring fine and I've had no problem gaining weight. This wasn't required when I was pregnant with my daughter so I'm not really understanding the urgency now. I feel like the doctors have been going a little overboard this pregnancy. I also had to get a fetal echo done and even the cardiologist was curious why I was there. I have a PFO but the cardiologist said they normally don't order a fetal echo just for that reason. Don't get me wrong I'd love to see my baby again but I don't want to have all these ultrasounds done for no reason.

I have a growth scan every 4 weeks from here on out. I have heart congenital heart disease so I had to have a fetal echo as well. As far as I understand they are continuing to do growth scans because of my heart problems and also because they keep seeing blood spots on my placenta. Good luck I hope everything looks great!

I'm just commenting on your choice of words, but you don't HAVE to do anything, your baby your body. Your doctor can make recommendations, but if you are questioning why they are ordering certain tests for you and you are not comfortable or understanding why, at the very least that should prompt you to discuss it more with your OB. You should feel like you are an active participant in your care, making informed decisions, not just an incubator along for the ride, IMHO. Your OB should at the very least be discussing why they are ordering things and taking your questions seriously.

I agree with you. I have been asking a lot questions but mostly the answers are just that it's necessary because of my history. I had the same history when I was pregnant with my daughter and didn't not have all these tests ordered. My last pregnancy I saw the midwife at the practice but she left for medical reasons and isn't practicing anymore. Honestly I've thought about switching practices but so far the doctors that have been recommended have offices which are far and they deliver out of a hospital that's about an hour away. The delivery isn't that bad but to have to drive that far while recovering afterwards really scares me. I had a c section first time and was in a lot of pain after. The incision also got infected. I want to try for a VBAC this time but if I have to have another c section driving that far would be hell.

I do, next week. I would say no, but I want to see the baby one more time.

I think it is because of my age...I am over 35 this time. With my first I was only 32. Lots of things are different this time.

I'm 25 weeks but I'll have one at 28 weeks and 34 weeks along with weekly BPPs.

While I'm not thrilled to have 2 appointments every week the last 2 months of pregnancy, it's important I'm at risk for IUGR, placenta issues and making sure he's getting proper nutrients is important.

I will have one at 32 weeks to check my placenta. I have a low lying one, and they want to make sure it has moved. The scan will be a growth one (just because). Remember, your doctors are there to help you, if you don't understand why you need the scan/ tests ask them. Be an advocate for yourself, which I know can be super hard to do some times. Good luck!!

I'm hypo as well (well controlled with meds for 5 years now), am measuring ahead (5 ft tall, there's nowhere for baby to go but out), and this hasn't been mentioned yet. I didn't have any growth ultrasounds last time either and I constantly was told by the all male OB staff how huge I was.

Do whatever you're comfortable with but I seriously believe it's all a crapshoot as to how well they can give you any certainty about the size of your kid. Everyone has a story about measurements being way off about themselves, their kids, or several people they know.

I have a growth scan schedualed. It's due to having crohns disease which can result in preterm births and low birth weight (due to malabsorption issues). Do I feel like i need it...not exactly but then again I can't be sure that this little one is properly gaining weight.

I have an ultrasound on Monday, I will be 26 weeks. My OBs have requested that I have them every 4-6 weeks due to blood spots on my placenta and marginal umbilical cord insertion (want to be sure that baby's growth isn't being inhibited).

I do, but I've had one every 4 weeks since I was 8 weeks because of the twin pregnancy. We also had to have a fetal echo. I'd definitely push a little harder if you feel they're not explaining everything. I had to do that with my OB because he wasn't treating our pregnancy differently than a singleton pregnancy and it should have been treated as high risk. Advocating for our care is our first mommy job for these kiddos!

I am having one at 28 weeks as well because I had placenta previa on my 20 week scan. I go to both the regular and the high risk doctor though, so I get a scan every time they see me at the high risk one.

I had my thyroid removed two years ago and am on high dose of synthroid. My ultrasound tech said they would start doing more scans starting at 28 weeks but haven't talked to ob about it yet. But I'm being seen on base and never see an ob so not surprised. Going Thursday for glucose test so I will ask then if I see an actual ob.

I won't yet, but because my last baby was more than 9 lbs, they'll do growth scans around 36-40 weeks, just to monitor baby's size and stuff. Silly because they won't induce early just because of size... But if I'm having an 11 pound whopper, I'm going for the c. My 7 and 9 pounders ripped me enough!

I don't have a growth scan coming up but I have at 32 weeks another ultrasound to check on baby's kidneys. Depending on how that turns out I should be done with ultrasounds for the remainder of the pregnancy - I like seeing baby too, but would love these last few months to be uneventful!

I am having one this Friday. I have a fibroid on the fundus of my uterus and it makes it hard to measure it with the little tape they have. Always measure big because of the dumb thing, so they just wanna make sure she is growing properly. Me and the hubs are super excited we get to see her again. If they offered me another one in the 3rd tri I'd take it as well…I love seeing her on the screen!

I had one yesterday! She has a single umbilical artery and so they wanted to make sure that she's growing appropriately. Thankfully, she had a big growth spurt! She went from being in about the 27th percentile at 24 weeks to the 56th percentile! We'll be back at 34 weeks to make sure everything still looks good.

Good on you for questioning it. I have one scheduled for today (28wks) and hadn't even thought to question it. It's expensive too! But apparently ivf pregnancies are higher risk plus I'm older so I suppose that they want to be cautious. I am really looking forward to seeing his face though!

I am having twins and I have a weekly U/S and growth every other week. With anything high risk - they want to make sure the babies are growing and getting what they need. I personally like the reassurance over believing that a sonogram will cause autism etc, esp since the odds of complications due to being high risk are scientific and measurable. It's hard but do what you feel is right. You're in charge not anyone else. Go with your gut after getting the facts.

Well as of now I cancelled the scan. I called the perinatologist and they said they schedule the scans from the start because sometimes it can be hard to get an appointment and unless my OB thought it was necessary, I didn't need it. However, my OB called today and my thyroid levels came back low so I'm thinking they're going to want me to still do the scan. Depending in what they say about the thyroid levels I'll probably get the scan just to be safe.

Due to being high risk with my heart problems, I will be having a sono at every appointment from next week (28wk appt) forward. Due to my congenital heart issues I also had a fetal echo, which thankfully showed everything is fine with baby's heart.

I just had one at 27 weeks and will have another at 31 weeks. I'm hypothyroid as well, my dr was worried about my weight (only gained 5lbs) and just wanted to make sure the baby's growth is on track. The tech estimated him to be 2lbs, on track for weight. Hope all is well!

I'll have growth scans every 2 weeks beginning at 32 weeks due to an umbilical cord abnormality.

Had growth scan (28 wks) yesterday and he is in the 97th percentile so they will be getting me to have another scan later on to keep an eye on his size. Any idea what happens if he does get too big?

I'm assuming they will either want to try to induce you early if you're far enough along or schedule a c section. Just an FYI though those estimates can be way off and in most of my experience (myself and friends/family) they have been. A week before my due date they said my daughter was 8lbs she was born 8 days AFTER her due date and was 7lbs 8oz.

I will have mine at approx 33 weeks. However, I'm not really sure what to expect. For those who have had the growth scans for past pregnancies, were they able to tell you accurately how big they think the baby will be at the time of birth?

Edit:sorry, just saw previous post. I guess there is a lot of wiggle room!

My cousin opted for an elective csection due to "big baby", she is petite, just about 5 feet tall and they said her daughter was over 8 lbs (not technically big). She was born less than 7 lbs

. Close to delivery those estimates can be incredibly inaccurate.
