Strollers... 2+ kids

I am not sure what to do.  My son with be 3 1/2 when this little babe rolls into town and I am not sure what my stroller needs will be.  Any mom of 2+ kids have any advice?
Double strollers (like the City Select) seem so expensive but I don't want to NOT get one and wish I had.  Ahhh!  What do you suggest?  I think he would be totally into a kickboard but I wonder if there will be times when it is just easier to sit him down and get moving. :)

Wait until baby is here to decide for sure. I'm a SAHM and take the kids out by my self pretty much daily.  The only place we used the double after DS1 was 3 years old was the zoo, state fair, and if we wanted to take an extremely long walk.
If you are mostly out with your DH, having two single strollers is probably a better bet for the rare times a stroller for your older child would be handy.

  • We have a single jogging stroller and plan to keep that when this kid arrives.  We also have a Beco Carrier so if we want to go on a walk that my daughter would want to ride in the stroller, we will use the Beco for the second kid and the stroller for my daughter.  However, I live in the country-ish and don't tend to go to malls or city type things often where we would need/want a double.

While I love to recommend my City Select, I don't think it would be the best solution for you.  DS#1 is almost 3.5, and he never uses the stroller anymore.  Unless you plan on having more kiddos, I'd suggest maybe getting a sit n stand, or just have a carrier with you so that if your DS needs to sit, you can put LO in the carrier and your DS in the stroller.  With the SnS there is a bench that they can sit on rather than just a kick board (for those times you just need to go).  Usually you can find the SnS cheap on Craigslist or at Consignment stores.

We are not planning to buy one since I figure I'll just wear the little one and let DS take the stroller for stroller occassions.  For the rare occassions where a double might be necessary, there are always these which will turn two cheap umbrella strollers into a double stroller.  I don't know how well they work but their amazon rating isn't bad:

  • My dd will be just over 2. I went with a Joovy Caboose Ultralight. Has all the features I wanted and we can remove the seat so dd can sit or stand when she is a bit bigger.

I would stick with the single and bring a carrier for the little baby in case your older one needs to ride for a little bit.

My oldest will be just over 3.5 and I'll have 3. I'm planning to bring my double and carrier on our outings but suspect my biggest will walk most of the time.

  • A bit of a different situation since I am having twins, but we just got a city mini double. DS will be 27 months when they arrive, but is still hard to control outside of a carrier/stroller, so I plan to wear one twin and push the other and DS when I need to be out with all 3.

  • I truly love the baby trend sit n stand deluxe....it has a great price for a double (think I paid $140US at walmart) the back seat is removable which then converts it to the sit n stand style or you can have 2 seats. If the seat is removed, there's a standing platform as well as a bench for sitting and then the front seat, so if you needed to you could get 3 kids on it at once. The only negative i have is that the front seat is not very deep and neither seat reclines very far. Neither of those issues bothered us. We used that thing all over disneyland with our 2 and 3.5 year olds and it was great!

My youngest will be almost 3 when little one comes. I have the city mini double for long walks, excursions and a single for just baby on short rides. The single(britaz b agile) also has a platform accessory for another child to stand on so I am going to get that as well just in case.
  • We are going to try get by without buying a double stroller. We can use our beco carrier for the baby and city mini for the toddler or our city mini for the baby and a cheap umbrella stroller for the toddler. If it's not working out we can just go buy a double.

I invested in the City Select only because we will have 2 under 2 and we use our stroller at least weekly.  I think the sit and stand might be better in your situation.

  • DS will be 2 when this LO arrives. We use our stroller very regularly so we invested in a double.

  • Thanks for the hot tips!

My son is a bit of a nut and not the tamest of toddlers.  He is super independent, stubborn and is afraid of NOTHING.  I am just concerned he still won't be at the point where he just walks calmly next to the stroller. Ha!

    In that case, backpack leash.
    Hahaha!  This cracks me up.

We don't currently have a leash for our son but I love leash debates.  Leashes were made for kids like mine.  Seriously.  If it keeps my kid safe...

  • I currently have the Uppababy vista and had planned to just buy the rumble seat at a cost of $99. My SIL graciously offered us her double stroller, so we'll be using that. My original plan was to wait until after baby #2 arrived and to truly see what our needs were. Double strollers are crazy expensive so I wasn't thrilled about the idea of rushing out to buy one.

  • I will have 2 under 2 in Oct. I will be getting the graco version of the sit and stand, the  Graco Ready2grow.  I love that is has 12 different riding options and that my girl can sit and face me and the baby in the carseat can face me :)  I have been looking constantly on craigslist and garage sales to see if I can find it a bit cheaper but. 189 is still not bad!  Keep in mind the strollers you look at are compatible with your carseat if you plan to use the carseat with the stroller.

I don't know if you've got the R2G yet, but I'd test it out with your DD.  My skinny butt 2 year old (at the time)
barely fit in the front seat, and wouldn't fit in the seat that faced me (he complained about falling out in both seats).  The front seat is really shallow, and DS#1 always looked like he was sliding out of the seat, and would
refuse to ride in it without the cupholder tray in place, which I had to take off to get it in our trunk (Prius).

If you've already tested it out and everything, just ignore me!  Just giving you a heads up that the R2G does have some issues you might want to look into!

My two will be 20 months apart. I am getting the second seat for our vista. Come the spring I will be craigslisting it up to find a double jogger stroller to go running with.
