Experience selling jewelry??

I have some diamond studs that my parents got for me a while ago and I would like to sell them. Anyone have any experience/advice? Should I go to a jeweler? I'm assuming I probably shouldn't use online sites. Any advice would be appreciated. :)

Re: Experience selling jewelry??

  • Yes have them appraised by a jeweler. Then try to find a reputable jeweler to sell them to, as most pawn shops/cash4gold places will not give you anything close to the value. Do you have the paperwork for them?

  • Also, what are your reasons for selling them? If you are willing to do a trade you are more likely to get closest to the actual value. Are they on sterling silver or gold posts? That makes a big difference in the value as well

I don't have paperwork. I bought them in the diamond district. They gave me the clarity information. They are on white gold posts. I actually haven't gotten them appraised but they were in the neighborhood of $1000? I'm
thinking of selling them because I have another pair and I never wear this pair anymore.

I would love to trade them but dh's jeweler didn't seem interested... So I guess maybe I will take them somewhere else.

I agree with Audrey about EBay after you get the appraisal. However, people usually want to see paperwork when buying online. It's definitely worth a try though

  • Out of curiosity, what size are they?

They are .75 carat total weight.
  • Well darn, I already have a pair in a close size.

Dh is upgrading me for my 30th bday but I would love an even bigger upgrade if I can get a good price for these! :)

Oh, my 30th is coming up, too! Wonder what I'll get... nothing? :) let's hope that's not the case.
  • Some jewelry stores will take a trade-in for an upgrade. You would probably end up better cash-wise by selling and putting the money toward a new set, but if the difference is minimal it may be worth the convenience to just trade them in.
