2nd Trimester

the litter box and my idiot husband

he just asked me to clean it "this one time."

I'm not sure exactly how dangerous it is, but I do know it's the very first thing my midwife addressed at my first appointment, and two of my nurse friends have warned me about it. and so, I'm steering clear and not going to risk it. however, my roommate thinks I'm just trying to get out of a dirty chore. he just walked out of the house and was pretty firm about his request. it just makes me so angry that he doesn't get it.

sorry, ladies. I know this is my first post and it's frowned upon to post before a proper intro. I've been lurking for some time now. as a new mom-to-be, I didn't think I'd ever have much to contribute. I just had to get this off my chest.

As long as you're not eating it or rubbing it in open wounds, you can clean the litter box. Toxoplasma is a protozoan that doesn't jump out of feces and find a way into your system.

Also, did your husband or roommate make the statement?  Or did you just refer to your husband as your roommate in paragraph 2?

I was wondering the same thing...

roommate = husband when he's being a dick head.
My OB was really adamant about me not changing the litter box. I even asked her if she would have me tested to see if I'd had previous exposure to toxoplasmosis, and she said that even if I had, she still didn't want me to change it. My husband was there when she said it, and I didn't really feel strongly about arguing in favor of me getting to mess with cat poop. So DH just does it.

But... your husband is an idiot, a dick head, and just your "roommate" for asking that you do it? I kind of feel like your husband isn't the one who's most at fault here...

    thanks for your input, nonetheless.

  • If your cat is a clean, indoor only cat, there is very little chance of you being exposed to anything. Also, if the litter box and area around it are clean, you're pretty safe too. Just make sure to wash your hands afterwards. But yeah, you're fine to clean a litter box.

  • For what it's worth, I've been a veterinary technician for 15 years and i own 4 cats myself. I was tested for Toxo at my first OB visit and it came back negative for any exposure. Essentially that means I have good hygiene. Regardless, I've been wearing gloves and a mask during my pregnancy, washing my hands thoroughly (as always), and trying to pass the buck at work as much as I can when it comes to feces ridden litter boxes from my patients. Trust me, if I haven't been exposed to Toxo after all these years, the likelihood of you contracting it from one litter change is highly unlikely. P.S. My fiancé refuses to deal with litter boxes period. Thank your lucky stars you have a SO that will!
  • If your cat is indoors only, you should be okay.

  • My husband just agreed that since I've been doing it for 6 years he can handle 9 months. I really don't mind doing it though.. It gets done faster and less litter gets all over the place.. Lol but he still insists on doing it.. So I'll take it!
  • I'm so glad I'm a dog person.

  • My OB says it is airborne, so just make sure to wear a mask and gloves and you will be fine. Like it was mentioned previously, don't eat it for dessert. I clean it myself otherwise the hubby will take the cat he loves oh so much to the vet to get euthanized. He hates her.
  • Honestly, if DH takes too long to get around to it (so more than 2 days..) I just take it outside and dump the whole thing in a black garbage bag, wash it down with the hose, and then take my shower immediately after. If it's an occasional thing, it shouldn't be a big deal.  This sounds more like an argument that's started over a little thing to cover for a big gripe to me. I'd just do it and try and talk to your husband to make sure he doesn't have further concerns that the two of your really need to hash out.

  • I cleaned it this morning. I didn't have gloves lying around, so I took plastic grocery bags and wore them as gloves, ha! I then washed my hands thoroughly. It's the first time I've cleaned it during pregnancy, but my husband couldn't get to it before he left this morning. And we have a cat with a sensitive stomach who needs a pristine litter box to poop properly, so I really wanted to make sure she was taken care of. Our cats are indoors only.
