Big belly baby/excessive weight gain

Hi ladies!

I had my post A/S dr's appointment yesterday and everything looks great.  Baby is measuring right on track EXCEPT his belly is in the 90th percentile!  I was also pretty bummed to learn I'd gained 9 lbs in 4 weeks which the dr said was excessive.  She's not worried about my overall gain at this point since it's within range but that was a LOT to gain in 4 weeks and she obviously wants to make sure I don't keep gaining 2+ pounds a week. I know I was eating too much crap and not exercising enough, so it's totally my fault and I know what changes I need to make.

She said the big belly on baby was likely "just chub" but of course I went to Dr Google who said that babies of moms  with gestational diabetes often have big bellies because their moms can't metabolize the sugars so it all goes to baby :(

Just curious if anyone has any experience with big belly babies, excessive weight gain, and GD!

Thanks!

  • I gained 3 pounds a week for quite a while, but it was water weight. Just watch your carbs closer and don't stress. :)

I've had experience with GD and I did gain too much the first month, not sure if you only want to know if people have had experience with all 3 combined or any of the 3. Don't stress too much. It's early with the A/S measurements, they can change so much. With my son I gained 8 pounds the first month and the doctor told me that was too much. However, I was really underweight to begin with so I think my body was catching up. But I did end up with GD despite having zero risk factors for it. And oddly enough, my son was born at 5 pounds 5 ounces - usually the opposite of what happens with babies born to mother's with GD. He actually had IUGR which is a completely different story but still not what I expected when I learned I had GD. I think there are just so many factors that could contribute to your baby's belly measuring big or your weight gain. Try not to worry too much!

  • Thanks ladies.  I'm really beating myself up right now so it's nice to have some reassurance.

  • I was told the same thing at my A/S scan at 18 weeks. I gained 15 pounds between my first 2 appointments and the doctor is not concerned with my overall weight gain yet because of my pre-pregnancy weight. She did tell me to start being more conscience of what I was eating. I've never been an exerciser so I'm sure that is contributing to it. I'm always generally more active when the weather is warm and enjoy taking walks, etc. so we will see how that affects my future weight gain. I've also made a vow to stop eating fast food completely. It's something we do way too often. Don't stress. You still have a ways to go and you can try and turn it around!

  • I was pretty nervous when I gained 10 lbs in 5 weeks, then at next appt I had gained 3 lbs in 4 weeks, eating about the same.  Some peoples bodies just put on more at different times I guess.  I'd only be concerned if that rate of increase stuck around.

I have yet to gain any weight, but our little one's belly was really big too.  I sort of worried about it for a bit, but when you think about it, things can change really fast and what you saw was just a glimpse of time in the grand scheme of things.  Maybe baby's abdomen is about to go through a little growth spurt and it put on the chub first.  You never know.  Don't beat yourself up!
