XP: Pregnancy after fibroids or uterine surgery...

Hi. I usually post on PGAL but I thought my question might get additional answers on here, so I came over to ask it. It's my 4th pregnancy and my first after an open myomectomy to remove fibroids. Im just wondering if any of you are pregnant with fibroids or if any of you have had them removed and are pregnant now. I'm worried that they'll come back for me... I had an open myomectomy in December and the surgery went well, but I'm now pregnant the first month I was allowed to try. I had two previous mc's that the doctor thinks could have been because of the he huge fibroid... One huge one was removed that was rapidly growing but there were a few tiny ones there too. For those of you who don't know, pregnancy often makes them grow like zits during prom week (I teach high school, hence the prom reference).

For anyone who had had them, I'd love to hear your experience. Also, did anyone have them removed and then come back? I know every pregnancy is different, but still. Lastly, I'm going to have to do a c section because of my history, but I'm curious if anyone with a history of uterine surgery was able to deliver vaginally.

  • I don't have really any experience for you but I'm pregnant with my first and they found a rather large fibroid on my 1st ultrasound. I only have one and it is over 10cm right now im 27 weeks and it doesn't seem to be causing any issues but my increase risk for a c-section. I'm really hoping to be able to deliver vaginally but my Dr says it is just a wait and see. They are going to let me try and labor and see if it works. I wish I had more experience but just wanted you to know you are not alone.

  • I had an open myomectomy 2.5 years ago, had some whoppers removed.  Since then they've found a couple of small (~4cm) fibroids with this pregnancy.  It may have been the nature of my myomectomy, they actually had to cut into the uterus to remove some of them, but my OB didn't even consider a natural birth.  I'm scheduled for a csection at 37 weeks because my OB doesn't want me going into labour.

Other than the csection thing, I'm not sure that they've affected my pregnancy at all.  Good luck to you!

  • I had a myomectomy in May of last year. They removed a total of 4, the largest of which was 11cm. All together, my doctor equated me to being nearly 18weeks pregnant :(. Surgery went great. I ended up finding out I was pregnant with my first in December. They already noted a new fibroid on my first ultrasound but it's pretty small. We're just watching it for now. I will have to have a csection because they had to make some full thickness cuts and essentially reconstruct everything, but had I not had surgery, I never would have been able to conceive.
  • I have a fibroid that was measuring at 4cm when I was 10weeks along I am now 34 weeks and haven't had an ultrasound to check on it since 20 weeks. my doc doesn't seem to worried about mine but I am cause since its not being monitored I cant tell if its growing bigger or not she says it shouldn't stop me from having a vaginal birth because of its location. but there are things that make me think it has grown it also seems like it moves at time. weird I know .. im hoping everything goes smoothly
  • I had an open myo May 2013. I had a total of 17 fibroids removed, and the majority of them were over 4cm in size; was given the 'ok' to start trying for pregnancy and we are having our LO 5/15 via C-section due to the extensive scarring. The doctor found 2 small fibroids that are present but have not interfered with this pregnancy. ;)
  • I had been trying to get pregnant for 6 years with no success.   I had a myometomy to address many large fibroids.  8 hours of surgery.  After being cleared, I missed my period and didn't think anything of it because I could never get pregnant on my own. What do you know, I was pregnant, didn't realize it until 9 weeks but miscarried.  I got pregnant again a month later and miscarried. Then went through IVF 2 months later and am now 33 weeks tomorrow.

Some fibroids did come back as they expected but not as large at the moment.  They are outside of the uterine cavity so the baby is not impacted.

I am 38 weeks and 3 days pregnant with my first and my fibroids have been my biggest complication. They first became an issue when at 19 weeks, one of them degenerated causing a ton of pain. I went to the ER, was given morphine and vicotin and later learned that ibubrophen worked best because it's an anti-inflammatory. Ibuprofen is not safe for the baby so I was only allowed to take it for 72 hours at a time and none was allowed after 32 weeks. I had to see a high risk doctor every couple of weeks.  I learned that the location of the fibroids is important
