No teeth biting

My LO is 3 weeks old with a gummy little smile (no teeth) yet in the last few days he has started using his gum to gnaw on my nipples. It usually happens in the middle to end of the feeding but combined with my already raw nipples I want to cry. Is biting like this normal and how can I get him to stop? TIA

Re: No teeth biting

  • I'm not sure you can really consider it biting since there's no teeth. Sounds like he's gumming and if he's gumming your nipple then he's not latched correctly. His mouth should be wide open and he should be on her areola. Break the suction, rub your nipple on his nose and down toward his mouth to get him to open wide, and then relatch.

Did you happen to work with an LC while you were at the hospital?  Do you have one available to help with latching?  I had really REALLY bad nipple pain right in the beginning because my LO was "latching" the way you're describing yours is.  He was gnawing me to death because he had a very minor case of tongue-tie.  It took me a few days to even realize that that was why I was in so much pain... it was my LC who figured it out.  When I took LO to an ENT, she said that it was such a minor case but I wanted it fixed because it was definitely causing us problems with BFing.  It took the Dr less than a minute to fix and LO latched perfectly and was able to BF right after.  I'm not saying your LO is tongue tied but if you can get some help from an LC with latching, that may help your pain.  GL and hope you feel better soon!
  • My LO started biting after I developed an oversupply, it was her way of trying to slow down the spraying from the let down. If you take your LO off the breast is milk spraying out? She would also get frustrated and pull off. A few days of block feeding and we were back to good, pain free feeding.

Never had the gumming issue but I can relate to nipple pain! I was so sore and cracked a week into my BF excursion that I became an EPer for 3 months, then switched LO to formula. Much happier household all around too. If you're interested in continuing to BF, see a lactation consultant. I did not enjoy BFing so I was happy to pump for LOs first few months.
