Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Fountain baby....

Our DD has been vomiting after just about every feeding and sometimes it's like a fountain. Are we giving her too much? Do we need to switch formula? Do we need to do smaller feedings more frequently throughout the day? She is on Similac Sensitive for fussiness and gas. She gets two 6 oz bottles a day and the rest are 4 oz.

Re: Fountain baby....

  • How old is she? Projectile vomiting is not normal. Is she gaining weight?

  • She's almost 11 weeks. She's gained over 5.5 lbs since she's been born. This has just started within the past week or so.
  • If the spitting is not bothering her and she is gaining appropriately, she could just be labelled a happy spitter and it's only really a laundry problem.

If it seems to be bothering her, she could be suffering from GERD or she could have a milk/soy protein intolerance.

I don't know much about formula so I don't know how much she should be getting. Has the gas and fussiness been better since being on the Similac Sensitive?

There is a TON of laundry!! Haha!! She gets to wear all her clothes that way haha!! Yea it seems to be. She hasn't been having much gas. Just every now and again. She used to be

  • I hear ya. DS spit up for a long time and now DD is doing the same. With DS, I had 32 receiving blankets and I would have to do laundry at least 2x a week because I would run out. I had one everywhere in the house, they were all within arms reach. They usually went straight into the hamper after one spit up.

My son is a spitter. He's 7 months old and its starting to get better. Some days are better than others. This weekend was baaaad and I have no idea what triggers it, but it really felt like everything I fed him came right back up.

IME, your LOs pediatrician won't care how much LO is throwing up unless she's not gaining weight/height/head growth on the curve. If she's fussy immediately after meals, or right after throwing up, it could be GERD and that would be something you'd want to bring up with the pedi either at LOs next appointment or put a call in and let them know. They will want to prescribe Zantac or Prilosec (liquid form) and that helped my DS not be so cranky about spitting. He still gets upset about it occasionally but it has really helped.

Smaller feedings more frequently sort of helps. Special bottles help somewhat too. Gas drops in every bottle helps some. But really nothing makes it go away, that valve at the top of the stomach just isn't fully developed yet and won't be until about 1 year old.

Invest in lots of bibs, burp cloths, and onesies. I had a lot of cute outfits for him in the 3-6 month sizes and he wore a lot of them once because he was constantly throwing up on his clothes. Keeping a bib on him 95% of the time helped until he learned how to pull the bib off. Also DS and a burp cloth always go places together. Going up and down the stairs always always makes him throw up.

And if she ever throws up on you before you're about to leave the house, don't assume that just washing your shirt with water gets the vomit out. Change your shirt. Learn from my mistakes.
