Are you doing this because your supplementing? If you are, when I did it with my first, I never mixed them in the same bottle. She would get one bottle all of BM, then one all of formula.
But if for some reason you want it mixed in the same bottle, I would think mixing formula first, then add the BM would be the way to go. That way there's less stiring/mixing of BM.

bolded: fewer bottles to clean
Oh heck ya! I guess I was wondering if there was a reason to do BM and formula at the same feeding? Instead of doing one feeding all BM, the next formula, or whatever.

Yes, we have started supplementing 2oz right before bed for several different reasons. Mainly because he refuses to nurse at that time, and I think it is because my supply is SO minimal during that time frame.

I was also wondering about this. My DD is BF with occasional expressed milk bottles and she absolutely refuses formula. She makes a sour face like we are poisoning her. Might mixing in some BM make it more appealing to her? I travel for work and want to possibly have formula as a backup plan for DH while I'm gone.

My next door neighbor had to mix and just up the formula ratio when she transitioned her DD.
If she refuses formula try 5 oz BM 1 oz formula. Then 4-2 and so on---- that is if you have alot of BM to try with. Or try smaller amount so it's not a waste.

When we started transitioning DD1, we had to mix a little formula with a lot of BM (I think maybe 1:4) and it took a week of that before we could transition 1:1, then 4:1 then all formula. But she was on BM only (no formula) for 10 months at that point.
