Fearmongers

My husband and I were doing some spring cleaning today and ran across some old pictures. Check out this sweet picture of me as a baby laying next to a jug of kerosene, lighter, pack of cigarettes, and an ashtray. I think we should all take a deep breath. We all survived crazy conditions and our LOs will be just fine.

Re: Fearmongers

  • Our kids will probably have to go live in an approved safe house during pregnancy where they have a schedule and specific diet. On an unrelated note, I absolutely love your siggy. I have watched it at least 50 times.

  • LOL, that's awesome!

my mom has a pic of me in my carseat on the couch in 1983... I was like "WTF is that thing I'm in?" she just laughed at me as we both looked at baby J's plush Graco.

Man how times have changed! If you were to tell any one of those stories in present times you would be flamed!

I have pictures of my in my crib. I have about 20 stuffed animals and a bottle in there not to mention I'm sure it was a drop side crib..... At 2-3 months old.

  • I love these stories! It helps remind me not to be so paranoid about every little warning out there.

When I was 6 weeks old, my parents moved into a new house. Unbeknownst to my dad, my mom put me on the floor in the living room for some reason. His hands full of stuff, my dad stepped on something squishy - ME! Obviously he didn't step hard and I was/am fine.

ha- yeah, that was totally my crib as well, complete with stuffed animals. Back in the 70s, the Jenny Lind cribs were all drop sides.

every watch, "Call the Midwife?" It was common in the 50's to leave your baby outside of your apartment in London in their stroller while you went about your day.

  • H and I have discussed bringing baby to the breweries/restaurant type bars with us as well.  They are all non-smoking & not loud or it wouldn't even be up for discussion.  I have seen a few people at local breweries/bars with babies in tow & didn't even realize that it was an option until recently.  I'm not sure if some have restrictions & some don't?

I don't see anything wrong with this as long as one parent is the sober driver, there is no smoke around, the noise level isn't too bad, and the baby isn't crying the entire time bugging the other patrons.

  • Not dangerous, but my nursery growing up was decorated with pictures of really scary-looking 1970's clowns. I'm more scared looking at them now as an adult than I ever was as a kid! They're just so awful. But I guess I wasn't traumatized.

  • OP I love your pic!! Hilarious. When I was very young my dad had a two seater van with a bed in the back we used to take camping all over the place. My dad would drive, I'd sit in the front seat and my mom sat in the middle on a folding lawn chair. He sold it when I was about four.

Oh, honey. In the 2000's almost all cribs were drop-sides. :)

My kids all went to bed in the same drop-side cribs, with bumpers.  They all had stuffed animals and blankets in their cribs too.  But not comforters.  Everyone knew that comforters in a crib would "make" a child succumb to SIDS.

Here's a pic of DS1 in his crib.  I think he's 8-9 mos old here, but that's how how his crib looked (complete with stuffed animals) from day 1.  :)  Amazingly, he survived.

(Probably because I kept the kerosene away, LOL!!!)

"Oh Honey"? I was specifically referencing the Jenny Lind cribs that have changed over the years. I haven't lived in a hole since the 70s.
  • DH's grandmother told me about taking her 5th child to her 6 week check up, it was winter and she wrapped her in blankets and went to lay her in the front seat surrounded by other blankets to keep her from rolling around on the seat too much.  When she patted the blankets the baby wasn't there, but on the floor of the car sleeping.  Apparently she slid out of the blankets while mom was arranging them!

Also maternity pants just had a hole for your belly and a giant string that tied above it to keep pants up, this was back in the 60's I think.
