It can go either way for me -- I've only known one girl personally, but Ainsley Harriet is a famous male cook/tv personality so I have no trouble seeing it on a man.
I always pronounce -ai- like the vowel sound in pain unless I have explicit reason to do otherwise because I was under the impression that was how English worked.
