NPR: Help! Need ideas on birthday present for 4 year old boy

I have no clue what to get DH's nephew (mine too) for his birthday. We see DH's sister and her family like twice a year only and in a couple of days I am going home for a week and will be seeing DH's family. DS and our nephew have birthdays within a few days from each other so DH's mom is throwing a small celebration for both boys this week. The problem is, I have no clue what to get this little boy for his birthday because I don't know what he likes. SIL is out of reach right now (on some boat from Alaska) so I can't really ask her about her son's interests. 

I am just looking for ideas on what to get a 4 year old boy. What are boys that age interested in?? I am hoping some STMs or those with nieces/nephews around that age would have some ideas.

    DS is only 2.5, but I would think any transportation style toy would be fun (race car, train, firetruck, bulldozer, airplane, space shuttle). There's also playmobil stuff. Melissa and Doug makes some cool toys that a 4yr old might like, too, so you could check their website.

    If you know whether the family is into sports, maybe a soccer ball or kid-sized baseball glove and ball?

    Superhero anything, my kids are super into Spider-Man right now, but Thor, Iron Man, the Hulk, they're all big right now and easy to find in stores.

    My nephew just turned 4 and he is super into the Ninja Turtles. They are coming out or came out with a new TMNT movie, so that's an idea.

    My nephews LOOOVE trucks and boy stuff like that. Also my brother and his wife are not into sports at all but I bought a T-ball set for my nephew last year (4th birthday). We showed him how to play and he LOVES it! Just don't get anything that makes stupid noises that will come back around to bite you in the butt ;-)

    Last year we got our friends son a Angry Birds Star Wars play thingy.  (real specific, I know, sorry)  It's basically a little set up that lets them play Angry Birds IRL.  He thought it was the most amazing thing ever.
