Posture with My Breast Friend?

All through BFing DD, I slouched horribly and ended up with back problems. I am finding myself doing it again. I generally lay DS (1 week old) down horizontally on the pillow as if in the cradle position, but he is too far below my breast, so I end up (subconsciously) hunching over. Are you supposed to have to put another pillow or blanket below the MBF to get them up high enough so you can sit up properly? Or do they assume baby is semi-upright? Not sure how I can screw this up, but I have somehow...

I remember it was super easy with DD to find myself hunched over when feeding.  Either get that pillow right up under your boobs somehow so LO is right there and you're not leaning over, or find a pillow or a stack of pillows that will let you do that.

  • The women who use it at my BF group put it right under their boobs, not at their waist. You can stick a pillow under if you need the extra support. At that age I used football hold and a bed pillow sideways on my side to bring dd up to the girls.

Maybe that's part of my issue - I can't get it tight enough to stay up. Too bad they don't come in a smaller size... I guess I'll have to use pillows to get it up there. Seems silly to have to rig something since this thing is supposed to be designed for BFing.

  • I never liked it. Only way I could get it high enough was to cross my legs. And LO refused to lay on his side. Would only eat on his back!!! Still, 5 months in... He has never stayed on his side for long while eating. I used it for about two weeks, then just held him in the rocking chair. I wish I had known about side laying when he was that little. Good luck! It's not for everybody, but I still recommend it to all my MTB friends.

I was never able to nurse comfortably sitting up. I always end up pulling something in my shoulder or messing up my knees by propping my legs up the wrong way... then I discovered the side lying position! My baby loves it and I'm much more comfortable too. Of course you can't nurse in public that way.

Totally find myself looking for a place to lay down!!! Lol
  • Remember, you want to bring the baby to the breast, not the breast to the baby. I generally hold my baby and sometimes use regular pillows or my Boppy to help support my arm.
