9 day old feeding time

Hi

When I left the hospital I was told to feed for 20 min on both sides every 2-3 hours. At first this seemed ok because I'm assuming my milk was still coming in, although it was in about 2 days after birth. Whenever I feed my baby now she spits up A LOT. Yesterday she projectile vomited 3 -4 times. My husband thinks I'm feeding her too much.

I pumped last night and the milk started flowing almost immediately (is that let down?) and I pumped 3oz on each side in 20 min. Is her stomach big enough to hold all of this? If not, no wonder the poor thing keeps puking. Her bottle of formula last night was 2 oz but she spit up everything around 1.5oz.

Today I've only fed her for 10 min (actively sucking) one side each session and she seems to be holding it down. She doesn't seem hungry between feelings and is satisfied after those 10 minutes. If I try to give her more, it just comes right back up. She's making enough wet & dirty diapers and her activity level is fine (sleep/play).

I feel bad because I feel like I should be feeding her more, but if she's satisfied after 10 min, is that ok? Did this happen for anyone else? Thanks!

  • Yes, I'm letting her eat until she pulls off. Then we burp and hang for a few to see if she spits/throws up. For example this was our last session:

Last feeding was only for 3-4 min (actively sucking) and she spit up. I just fed her now (2 hours later) and she only ate for 4 min before pulling off. We burped, offered again, and she ate for another 5 min.

To clarify, I wasn't feeding on both sides unless she seemed hungry (trying to keep it even). I fed her formula because it was my husband's birthday and I had a beer. Granted it was 4 hours prior to that feeding, but it wasn't worth it to me.

  • Fwiw most people go with if you're sober enough to drive then you're sober enout to nurse.

Be careful of pumping this early as you can easily trigger over supply. If baby's is not miserable about spitting up, it's a laundry problem, not a medical problem. Let her eat when she wants however much she wants. We're 6 mo in and she spits up ALL THE TIME still. DD quickly did not need 20 minutes. I'm pretty sure my LCs said 25 minutes total sucking per feeding. However, that an general estimate, do what works for you guys. Also remember formula and milk have different concentrations of caloris so they are difficult to easily compare.

    1) You can't overfeed a breastfed baby. Because nursing requires active participation, it is unlike bottle-fed babies where the milk is forced into them. They will stop when they are done.

    2) While it may seem like she is spitting up a lot (including projectile vomitting), this is completely normal. It always looks like it's more spit-up/vomit than you think. This can also occur if the baby is taking in milk too fast, which seems to be happenig in your case. Please read this great link:

A few statistics (for all babies, not just breastfed babies):

    • Spitting up usually occurs right after baby eats, but it may also occur 1-2 hours after a feeding.
    • Half of all 0-3 month old babies spit up at least once per day.
    • Spitting up usually peaks at 2-4 months.
    • Many babies outgrow spitting up by 7-8 months.
    • Most babies have stopped spitting up by 12 months.
    3) Pumping this early in your BFing relationship really messes with your relationship. You can get oversupply (which looks like is happening) and takes you out of sync with your LO's needs. Put the pump away.

    4) If she is satisfied after 10 min, that is fine. If you offer and she refuses, dont offer any more. If you offer and she takes it, then she wants more. You can't make her suck if she doesnt' want to.

  • I just want to reiterate that spitting up, even a lot, is totally normal. It doesn't mean you are doing anything wrong.

  • Feed on demand- take cues from baby. There is no set time I downloaded an app to track feedings and so I would remember what side last etc my baby is also nine days old I I average ten feedings a day at 20 mins each

  • Just wanted to reiterate PP's advice to throw away the clock, and put away the pump. Feed one side, as long as baby wants, and only offer the second side if she seems hungry. Sometimes she may eat every 2-3 hours, sometimes she may eat and then eat again 45 mins later. Just go with the flow (haha), it'll work out much better in the long run.
