Bottle Nipple Size

We EBF but I pump and DD gets a bottle when she is with grandma or sometimes when we are out just because we're not good at public nursing.

I'm starting to introduce food at "lunch time" and I give her a small bottle with it. It just seems like it takes sooo long for her to drink it. We're using Dr Brown size 1 right now. She has no problem going between bottle and breast. She is also playing with the bottle nipple a lot lately. If this was a nanny charge I would suggest moving up the nipple size, but I'm concerned about the "ease" of the bottle for her vs. BFing. What do you think of moving her to size 2?

Re: Bottle Nipple Size

  • How old is your LO? You might consider giving a Sippy instead for out and about times. I personally NIP because I have to pump enough while working full time as it is. I would not recommended going higher than the nipple flow you're at or it could definitely cause nipple confusion/frustration. It should take forever to give an EBF baby a bottle, that means you're doing it right.

  • She's 6 mo. She thinks the sippy is fun but not really getting any milk with it. I was kind of thinking if I have her a bottle with some food at lunch it would replace that session. Not that I need to replace it yet, I suppose.

As for NIP, I'm comfortable with the idea, it's just so awkward for us. I really seem to need a boppy and an arm chair- ridiculous! Plus, I'm single and stay home with her, so it usually means I can hand her off to a friend to feed her.

  • Thanks. At this point I'm just replacing the session with a bottle but I think I'll try nursing before offering solids and see how it goes. I guess I was mostly wondering if people just stay on size 1 the whole time or if moving up messes with nursing. Thanks all!

I was told that breastfed babies should stay on size 1 nipples and never move up in size.

Post-note: I just checked the website for my bottles (Tommy Tippee) and it says breastfed babies stay on the smallest size always. The other sizes are only for formula fed babies.  I"m pretty sure this is the same for all brands.
