Getting LO to sleep

I've been having a harder time getting S to sleep (she's nearly 13 months old) lately. I tried to transition her off bottles but she wouldn't drink enough/have enough pees with only sippy/straw cups so she takes two bottles a day, one of those at bedtime. Our routine is to take a bath, then jammies and sleep sack, bottle, then bed. Typically with the bottle she has always gone to sleep while taking it and I can put her down in crib. Lately not so much. Ok so a little rocking or a little bouncing I can handle, but it's sometimes taking an hour+ to get her down. I currently have her in there screaming after an hour of trying to get her to sleep and I feel like a horrible mother.

How do I CIO at this age? Is that the best thing to do? Help :(

Read Ferber's book. Even of you don't CIO, he talks a lot about sleep associations.

Try moving the bottle up a step earlier in the routine, but keeping everything else the same.

  • Oh no... Does S take a binky? I know, I know… one more thing to wean in the future, but G only gets her binky in the crib and it gives us all a great relief! Ditto TJ, maybe continue doing bottle but earlier so she doesn't associate it with bed, necessarily.

  • Thanks y'all!

No binky - she's never been a fan. I tried last night and she threw it down. :)

I have Ferber's book so I'll re-read and try it. Good idea about moving the bottle too so she doesn't associate it with bedtime. Hopefully this is a short-lived phase!!

    Ditto on Ferber.

Also, consider whether she might be overtired (a la Ferber). A lot of kids have a harder time going to sleep if you put them down later than their body would naturally want to. Might not hurt to experiment with the bedtime.

We did a modified CIO at 9 months and it was the best thing to happen to our family since the birth of DS :)

It might be a short lived phase- DS is an excellent sleeper but will randomly pull weird crap for a couple of weeks.

  • Our LOs are very close in age. We did CIO at 10 months and still have to do it every now and again when she has bad spurts, and she still has them......I hate it but like @mnerani said its been the best thing for us (hands down)..... If you know she's not hungry, wet or in pain - it's sometimes the best thing to fix the problem.
