One & Done: Only child

XP: Rec your modest fridge

We just moved in our new house less than a month ago and the fridge is about done for. It's 12 yrs old, so we're trying to find a new one that doesn't cost a whole ton. The space is 33". We like french door ones with ice makers. Limit is about $1500.

Did you buy one recently and love it? What kind?

  • Check with your local energy company.  They may have a plan to sponsor replacing it if it is not energy efficient.  This happened for a friend of ours.

  • We found that online sales are better than in store offerings. Good thing they price match because it's nice to see them in person. We loved a Kenmore Elite 3k one that came down to $2300, but it's too much.

  • We have a French door (freezer bottom drawer) and I am not a fan. Mine is on the smaller side (the particular model has been discontinued), and I find the freezer really hard to work with. We (one day) will be changing back to a side by side. Since now we know we are OAD, we don't need all the extra room.

  • We got a French door refrigerator with a bottom freezer. It's a stainless Samsung from Best Buy. I really wanted ice in the door but they don't make many in the narrower size we need and couldn't justify jumping from $1300 to $2300 for ice convenience. Wish we had more space to work with. Standard now seems to be 36".

You ladies would be proud of my bargain finding skills: 10% off moving coupon on top of sale price (down from $1600), 10% off with the store credit card (we're closing it after we pay it right away), $150 rebate from power company, and they'll price adjust if it goes down more on Memorial day. Hurray! We saved so much we bought an over the range microwave because the regular microwave we have eats up too much counter space. Couldn't talk DH in a matching dishwasher, but it's still a win.

  • We have a french door with interior ice maker that we got from the sears outlet. No damage - just missing the wheel cover on the bottom (which I was able to order for $20) - if you have an outlet near you its worth looking into.
