Pregnant after a Loss

UPDATE2 at the bottom -loss mentioned...Placenta implanting causing bleeding??

edited May 2014 in Pregnant after a Loss
Since yesterday I have had two instances where I wipe and there is a smudge of red blood on the paper. I called the after-hours doctor for my clinic who doesn't seem to be concerned.  He asked if I heard a heartbeat at my last sono and how far along I was (180 at 8 wks).  He went on to say chances of a miscarriage are so low right now he believes its the placenta implanting in the uterus is causing the tiny bit of blood.  Have you all ever heard of this?  I don't google anymore, but thought you all would be able to provide very knowledgable information on this.  I have some mild cramping, but I can't help but think this is the beginning of the end.  He said to call him back if the bleeding became consistent or if the cramping was more "moderate" rather than mild.  It has not.  I had been doing so well emotionally and now I'm turning into a wreck again.  I don't know how I'll even celebrate mother's day now with thoughts of an impending miscarriage.  I would appreciate any advice or experience.

Thank ladies.

UPDATE: Well, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong as my spotting was not letting up and this morning went to the ER.  We discovered we lost our precious baby shortly after my last ultrasound.  I wasn't given much information other than follow-up with my doctor.  I'll call him tomorrow morning and see where we go from here.  I'm not sure if I can naturally miscarry or if I will need a D&C, but would sure appreciate any advice you ladies have to offer.  My mind is cloudy so if you all can offer advice on what I should ask my doctor tomorrow as well I would really appreciate that.  Does repeat loss testing usually happen after 2 or 3 miscarriages?  Should I for go my OB and go to an RE from here?  Any advice is appreciated.

I want to wish you all healthy pregnancies and hope to join you all soon.

I'm so sorry! Spotting is always scary! It's great your doc isn't worried and it sounds like all should be well. When do you get to go in for your next check up?

@kountingsheep-I actually had a spot of dark stuff on my liner and because I got so concerned about it I actually used a tampon to see if there was more and to make sure my cervix was still high.  Biggest. Mistake. Ever.  The actual red was so so so minimal I think had I not done that, it would've been brown by the time it made it's way to the liner.  I sound like a crazy woman for doing that, but I literally had a PGAL crazy moment.  I had been doing so well emotionally and this is definitely 5 steps back :(

  • Spotting is scary, but it can be normal. I spotted a lot with DD...after exams, sex and sometimes just spontaneously. As hard as it is, relax, drink lots of water to stay hydrated and attempt to keep your mind off of it. I hope you get in to see your doctor soon. I know that on my BMB the advice was mostly not to worry unless you were soaking a pad (good advice, but it doesn't stop your brain from working overtime.

I'm so sorry to hear this. We had a loss right after an u/s and it was so heartbreaking. As for what to ask your doc, it sounds like you want to hear your options. I had a natural miscarriage and declined a d&c, which I now regret. I didn't realize if I had a d&c they might be able to do some testing to find out of there was a chromosome problem that caused the miscarriage. So that is one thing to ask about. As for a referral, typically doc's will recommend a specialist after 3 losses unless there are complicating factors like AMA. And sometimes insurance won't cover until a third loss. It is definitely worth asking about when you are ready. And I don't know if you have a therapist or counselor but if not a referral would be another thing to ask for. Getting counseling can really help with grief, loss, and all the heartache.

I'm so sorry for your loss and I hope your heart can heal in time.

I would ask about RPL testing if you want to. Sometimes insurance requires 3 losses, but not always. I was able to see a RE after my 2nd loss & had no insurance troubles.

  • I am so incredibly sorry for your second loss :(. How devastating.

Regarding miscarriages: with my two singleton losses I have had a D&C. Mine were a bit later, and both times my OB/GYNs were fairly adamant about going that route. I feel like 8 weeks is a bit of a gray area, and they might give you choice (D&C, natural, drug induced). Since you have started bleeding a bit on your own, you might want to see what your body does over the next few days. However, I know how torturous it is to continue with an unviable pregnancy for any length of time, so if you decide you can't deal with that I completely empathize.

As for repeat loss testing, most insurances require 3 losses. Some even say 3 consecutive losses. For me, we did the RLT after 3 miscarriages (not consecutive).

At this point, with one chemical and one 8 week loss, I wouldn't let your mind go too crazy with an RE. If you get RLT done, and they find some issues (clotting, genetics), then you might get a referral to go over your treatment options moving forward. However, even after 3 missed miscarriages, I did not go to an RE after my last loss. I had been down that road (DD was an IVF/ICSI baby) and I just simply wasn't willing to be poked and prodded like that again. If I were you (which I'm not, I'm just trying to give you my own honest advice), I probably would try and take a deep breath and speak candidly with your OB when you see them. Ask them about RLT. If you feel strongly about having it done now, you might be able to pay OOP (I have no idea the cost, but some things are worth the peace of mind). Or you might have a doctor that will code repeat loss after 2.

All this to say, try to take this one thing at a time. This is a lot to process. Your OB should be able to guide you, and we'll be here if you have questions. I'm so sorry :(.

I am so, so sorry to read this update. My T&Ps and huge ((HUGS)) headed your way.

As for your RPL question-I was referred to an RE after my 2nd loss. In my case, my o/b factored in two losses in a row, an EP (loss of tube) and AMA. It would be good to ask your Dr and see what they recommend. The TTCAL blog has a great section about RPL that you may want to look over for more questions to ask your Dr.

    Again, ((HUGS))

  • I am so sorry for your loss.

In piecing together information from posts in this thread, it sounds like your first loss was a chemical pregnancy, and now this loss at 8 weeks. This is very similar to my back-to-back losses, except my first loss was at 8 weeks and the following one was chemical. For the 8 week loss, I did have the D&C. I found out I had lost my baby on a Monday, and the D&C was performed that following Friday. I wanted to see if I could miscarry on my own during the week... I do not recommend this. It was truly awful. It was the most painful thing I've ever been through, physically and emotionally. I was so thankful for the D&C when the time came, because my physical suffering was over and the procedure itself was quick and painless. I feel like emotionally/mentally it is the better option as well. So my advice would be to go ahead and schedule the D&C. It's not an easy decision to make, I know, but I don't think you'll regret it.

So many ((Hugs)) to you :(

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. ((hugs)) I had a D&C with my first m/c and it was much easier on me psychologically than my natural m/c. With the D&C, there is closure, and residual bleeding doesn't have tissue in it, and the blood loss is less. With my natural, it was really hard to have to see the tissue and also the bleeding was incredibly intense. Again, I'm so sorry.

Thank you to everyone and to those that shared their D&C experience.  I started bleeding last night with lots of heavy cramping and when I went to the doctor this morning, they said everything was sitting on my cervix waiting to come out.  My doctor was able to take everything out and the cramping stopped immediately.  I'm grateful everything was so quick and although not painless, it was definitely manageable.

I want to wish all of you the best on your pregnancies.  I hope each and everyone gets their rainbow babies!
