Devastated.......

Just found out I can't breastfeed my little boy anymore :-( I have RA it's gotten pretty bad so I have to go back on my methotrexate and start having monthly infusions so can't breastfeed anymore. Due to that and my health situation I've gotten pretty depressed. Trying to stay positive but it's pretty hard and the fact I have to go bsck to work this week :-(

  • Agree 100% with Aronie. Your health is so much more important so that you can take care of the baby.
  • I understand why you feel devastated, but you should feel wonderful! Not only did you breastfeed for as long as you could, is something you wanted to do! It's wonderful you breastfed at all! Your health is important, though. You need to be able to be there, happily and as pain free as possible, for your LO.

I know it didn't work out like you planned, but all that matters is that both you and the baby are healthy, and the baby is still going to get fed.  He'll be fine, and you'll find other ways to bond with your sweet little guy.  Take care of yourself, mama!   And don't beat yourself up, you did great even BFing this long :-)

  • I have to go back to work this week also so that part I can commiserate with...but your baby needs a healthy momma about 1000x more than they need bm. My son was exclusively ff and he's totally fine. I was also eff and I'm basically fine...anything wrong with me doesn't have to do with formula ;)

  • You have every right to be devastated. I'm sure I would be too. Intellectually you know it must be done and you're no less of a mom for making this choice, but I can see why it would sting, especially as you prepare to return to work. Hang in there mama... What feels impossibly difficult now will slowly become more normal over time.
  • I understand why you are feeling devastated. My mom got ulcerative colitis when I was a baby so she had to stop breastfeeding me a lot earlier than she wanted to. I think I turned out okay! Your baby will, too, and I echo PP's when it comes to being a healthy mama for your LO. Hugs and good luck with this transition. It will get better!

  • Oh I'm so sorry, Mama. I hope everything works out for you- this sounds like a really difficult time, both health wise and going back to work.
  • I have RA as well and have been able to keep it somewhat under control with the embrel shots while breastfeeding. Have you tried that? I'm sorry you have to stop though

So sorry. I had to stop as well and it was a huge disappointment. Try to be proud of what you were able to give your baby rather than dwelling on stopping. Your health is so important, too. Take care

  • Oh no! I get monthly infusions and am on steroids. I can still BF on them but I know how it is battling a big disease at the same time as being a new mom
