Newborn sleeping question FTM

Mobile lurker since January..
My little one was born on Friday and I had a quick question I can't seem to find anywhere. And frankly I'm a little embarrassed to ask anyone I know cause the answer is probably really simple.
After little one is done eating and burping is it ok to let her sleep on her stomach on my chest for an hour or so? Not inbetween every feeding. I know I should be sleeping but I'm ok for the moment with the sleep I get when she is sleeping on her back in the bassinet.
Honestly I'm really loving her looking like a cute frog but worried about stomach sleeping. (and I'm annoyed with my in laws always wanting to hold her this soon! )

Re: Newborn sleeping question FTM

  • Yup nothing wrong with some baby cuddles :-) the stomach issue comes from leaving babies unattended while stomach sleeping. There's a higher chance of something going wrong. But if little babe is on you, I say go for it!

  • I am FTM and haven't delivered yet but I don't see a problem with this for short stretches every now and then, especially if you've already burped her.

  • Laying on your chest is totally fine, just not in the bassinet/crib.

And it counts as tummy time. :). It was on the list of encouraged positions I got when we were discharged from the NICU.

  • DD only slept on my/DH 's chest for the first 6 weeks! We used to take turns sleeping at night while the other was holding the baby. So yes perfectly fine as long as you don't leave the baby on her stomach unattended.

  • At night DS has been sleeping on my chest tucked into my tank top and we both sleep (I'm sitting up in a recliner) During the day I've been trying to put him in his basket to sleep.

Nothing wrong with it. We won't be able to do it forever so enjoy it :)

Our pediatrician said that this position does not count as tummy time which confused the hell out of me. Glad to hear that others are being told it does!

We did it with both when they were newborns :) can't wait until this little gut gets here so we can snuggle this way!
