To those thinking about cloth diapering - upcoming sales

Just a reminder if you are buying new that there are usually good cloth diaper sales for Memorial Day. (Also July 4th & Labor Day, basically any holiday that there's usually retail sales you can also find cloth diaper sales. So you have a few chances to catch good deals before baby arrives.) The Cloth Diaper board usually has people post deals, and good ol' Google is helpful too of course.

  • try B/S/T fb pages. some are crazy priced because those involved are ridiculously crazy about their diapers (perfect patter placement, etc). but good deals come through as well. i'm so addicted to second hand shopping that rarely is a store sale/online sale good enough for me anymore.

  • Thanks for the heads up! I used disposables for dd because we lived in an apartment without washer/dryer and I did laundry only every other week (I hated the laundromat, first-world problems), so I knew I couldn't do cloth. This time I'm really looking to save $ not buying diapers all the time. I feel pretty lost but ill start creeping the board and talking to friends. Thanks again OP!

The cloth diaper board is an amazing resource. I'm a FTM and definitely cloth diapering but I was so lost. So I've been lurking on the CD board for a couple weeks and also took a class at our local independent baby store (most useful $10 I've spend in a while!). It taskes a while to figure out the acronyms on the CD board but the ladies seem really knowledgable.

What are some of your favorites? We're not planning on announcing on FB until at least 20 weeks or possibly until after baby is born, so I have to search all that stuff manually so that it doesn't show up that I "liked" a baby-related page. I know it's neurotic but so am I.

  • A few of my family members CD but it's still confusing to me even with their advice. I found Green Mountain Diapers to be a good resource for CD, especially first timers. They also have a nice selection for purchase and the prices seem great. I have also snagged a few on Amazon Prime here and there.
  • Check out youtube. obbsandlala has a great intro series.

  • there is a BST page for blueberry/swaddlebee diapers. i prefer their AIO simplex. we also use BG AIO elementals (prefer the old style but have a few of the new style).

we were strictly prefolds and covers until DS was over a year old. i hate pockets (i hate stuffing and dealing with inserts all the time) so when prefolds started to become difficult to put on to a wiggly toddler i began looking for deals on secondhand AIO's. i found most on a local for sale or trade page. the BG BST page is usually pretty crazy and outrageously priced. but sometimes good deals come through.

i shoot to pay $12-15 per AIO. new they range $17-25 each. i bought some new BG freetimes when they were doing a deal for 6 freetimes which made them $13/ea. i split the order with a friend so she took half and i took the other half. i ended up swapping those freetimes for swaddlebee's. i wasn't a fan of the freetimes. the flapping inserts bothered me and they were bulky, much like pockets. when i was buying prefolds second hand i was looking to save at least $1 per prefold. i looked to save at least $2 per cover.

i've never spent more than my ideal price range on diapers. i'm picky and wait for the deals and stalk certain pages and sites like crazy. i'm the same way with his clothes. my price range for a pair of pj's is $4-6 each. the only time i've paid more was one time when i felt like "splurging" by spending $11 on a new pair. i either buy EUC/VGUC second hand or on super clearance in store or online with free shipping. those new purchases are rare though. TCP ran a 40% off clearance sale plus free shipping and i picked up a few pairs of pj's for $5 but not many.

i have a ton of luck with a local for sale or trade page for mom's. those ladies have high quality items that they sell on the cheap. i sometimes have to drive a bit to go pick it up but i still find it worth it. some of my latest purchases: snugabunny swing used for one baby, $75; free bag of maternity clothes; 4 pairs of carter's pj's (one pair worn once-mom purchased wrong size), $15 total; snuza, $70; kick and play piano, $12; travel size sleep sheep, $7. i will probably look to them for a decent crib $100 or less. paying attention to those pages can be incredibly helpful.
