~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~
Welcome! This is a check-in for moms who are/were on a dairy free and/or soy free diet due to their LO's intolerance. The check-ins will be posted every Monday morning on the Breastfeeding board and XP'd to the Food Allergy board. If you'd like to join the group, just post an intro here and dive in! To check out the archive of our previous check-ins, please see the MSPI Moms Blog (www.mspimoms.blogspot.com).
1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?
2. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?
3. Lastly, a request: I am thinking of passing the torch to another mama for posting the check-ins. DS had a tofu dog at a family BBQ this weekend and he was fine, so I think we're officially past our MSPI journey. I think another mama who's currently in the thick of things might have a better perspective to share with you all. I'll definitely still check in to offer advice/experience. The blog is really, really easy to update (if I can do it, anyone can). Please reply here or send me a PM if you're interested. Thanks!
Re: ~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~ 5/5
2. LO was baptized last week. We can celebrated at home and my mom and I did almost all the cooking. We met the following dietary restrictions: dairy/soy free, vegan, gluten free, sugar free and but/apple/avocado allergies.
3. I can take over if no one else wants to do it. I have plenty of time.
1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?
I think we're doing really well. Someone posted a link to a poop slideshow a few days ago and it made me much more confident in saying that DD's diapers have been normal! We did have a minor setback yesterday due to frozen milk. I already donated close to 200oz, but may have not gotten rid of enough. I kept track of when I eliminated what, but with the delay of it getting out of my system it's hard to say when my milk started being "clean". I'll probably just skip a few weeks and see if she does ok.
2. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?
Nothing this week.
3. I too can't seem to get my siggy to work or delete so I might not be the best person to run the check-in either
The health benefits, for me, have been a big silver lining. I lost way more weight than I would ever have been able to lose through willpower alone (admittedly that was hard at times when I was afraid I was losing too much), and now I just need to maintain it. We eat SO MUCH healthier now and will be keeping that up. DS has a pretty diverse diet - he's the only toddler I know that loves lentils and chard! So yes, hang in there, it will get easier with time and you will gain a lot from the journey.
1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? We are doing good. I've come to the conclusion that corn makes her poops VERY mucousy (no change in mood though) so I've added it to my "do not eat" list. Going back to work has been difficult because I'm so hungry all the time. I bring plenty of safe snacks but I feel like a bottomless pit these days. Using my brain again must be burning extra calories.
Oh, we ate fish last night for the first time in over 2 months - fingers crossed!
2. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? Our pedi mentioned at our last visit that they are starting to promote solids at 4M now (they used to recommend at 6M when DD1 was that age). She said something about introducing earlier to avoid the development of allergies and how allergies are less prevalent in countries that do not delay solids or high allergen foods. I know I can introduce solids whenever I feel comfortable (which is NOT at 4M!) but is this change being recommended everywhere or just our pedi's office? It's bound to come up again at her 4M visit in a couple weeks and I just don't think DD2 is ready at all and I plan to be VERY careful, when it is time, due to all the intolerances we've figured out while BF'ing.
3. I'd be happy to help if no else takes it. My main concern would be getting it posted on time. I tend to check-in late (like now) since I've been back to work.
@rocknrollfriend, congrats on your journey! It definitely gives me hope and I'm glad to hear you'll check in still - you've been a wonderful resource for me, so far. Btw, your new siggy pic of your son is absolutely adorable!!
1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?
We're improving a bit, I think. I confirmed that DS has a strong (skin, mood, and GI) reaction to sunflower seeds, so we're avoiding those now. I'm also (slowly) eliminating corn, and have started seeing some improvement in DS's poop. It's rough, though. We're now dairy, soy, peanut, tree nut, beef, wheat, corn, and sunflower seed free. I'm basically living off oatmeal and chicken and rice for now, and when I get things under control I'll start incorporating more things into my diet.
2. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?
Nothing today!
We are doing ok, I thought I had the diet under control, milk and soy free, until I ate out. DS has occult blood in his stool again. I am trying to eat really clean now.
2. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?
How long did you go before eliminating another item from your diet? My pedi said to give it ten days to get out of both is our systems, I just want to see if that's the norm.
3. This is my second check in so I'm not totally comfortable with taking over yet.
Hi, I am new to this and wanted to introduce myself.
I am FTM. My DS is 7 months old. I started suspecting milk protein intolerance about a month ago because he had so many different symptoms, however did not put it all together because they were so vague and on and off or could be attributed to other causes (very mild eczema, mild congestion/cough, on and off fussiness/back arching when nursing or later, on and off green stools, gassy/spitting up on and off..). Now it seems pretty obvious, but they never occured together and since we have no food allergies in the family, I did not suspect that. So about 5-6 weeks ago, I cut out all "obvious dairy" for 3 weeks, he seemed like he was doing really well, so I reintroduced it and then after 4-5 days, I noticed blood in his stool one time, followed by constant green, mucousy stools 2-3x/day. This was the first time he had blood in his stool ever and never had he stooled so much since he was a newborn. That was 2 weeks ago. Then, I cut out all obvious and cooked dairy. Now his stools are still green, but less or no mucus and only 1-2x/day. I have been starting to cut out hidden dairy now (still trying to figure it all out). Otherwise, DS is a very happy baby, sleeps well. He is on the small side, 10% for height and 20% for weight, which is a bit unusual because he comes from a tall family.
Obviously, I am pretty new to this and also pretty bummed. Like so many of you, I have a huge pumped milk stash I was planning to use when I weaned him around one year and the thought of having a child with food allergies is really scary to me.
A few questions...
1. Are there different levels of MP sensitivitiy...since DS symptoms were not that severe until the last episode, is it possible I would be able to cut out just obvious and cooked dairy and he would be fine? Up until 6 months, I was eating regular ice cream, yogurt, butter, cooked dairy, etc. (I don't like cheese and usually just drink almond milk).
2. For those of you breast feeding, how do you plan to wean? I work FT and I am also going to be out of town for 5 days right around DS first birthday so that was my timeline for weaning him. Now that WCM may be out of the question, what have other people done?
3. Could this be the reason why he is such a small baby? As I said, both of us come from very tall families so having a baby at 10% for height is very unusual.
Thank you so much and I look forward to keeping up with this group!
Thank you!
I think since @Chichigo offered first and doesn't seem as crunched for time, I'll pass the reins to her. I'll send a PM soon!
@ohsowell It can actually take 2-4 weeks for the proteins to work their way out of your systems, so I'd give it a little more than 10 days. That is what I hear from most other mamas.
@krae771 Welcome! There are definitely different levels of intolerance, based on what I've heard from other MSPI mamas. I think it can also change in an individual baby over time. Some mamas can just cut obvious dairy and their LOs symptoms clear up, while some need to avoid all dairy, even hidden. You'll just have to experiment and see how he does. I still nurse my son so I can't offer advice on weaning, but there are lots of other options aside from WCM. You could offer another kind of milk (coconut, almond), plus water and solids. Lastly, there have been babies with FTT due to an allergy or intolerance, but I think if overall he's doing well and the pedi isn't concerned, I wouldn't be either. HTH!
1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? This is my first time posting so I will do a little introduction. My LO is 8 weeks old and was just diagnosed with a possible dairy intolerance. He has been having green mucous/bloody stools, very gassy, eczema and our pedi told me to cut out all dairy since he is EBF. This was Monday, so I am only 3 days into this. So far, so good. I have been reading food labels like a crazy person to make sure I'm not getting any hidden dairy also. I am mostly missing chocolate but I'm sure I will survive! LO is doing about the same, still having green mucous/bloody stools and is still pretty gassy.
2. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? I guess right now the only question I have is how long did it take for you to notice a difference in your LO, specifically their poop. I know dairy can take 2-3 weeks to get out of our system but I feel like his poop is more mucousy and bloody than it was a few days ago and it's kind of discouraging.

@NGilmerGirl Welcome! Look for Enjoy Life chocolate! If you can't find it in a store near you I think you can order it online. That stuff saved my sanity... Re: how long it takes to see improvement, it can really vary. Some mamas see an improvement within a few days, and then a setback, then gradual improvement. For my DS his poop never really got back to normal until I finally cut out wheat for a few weeks. It did get much better (less green and mucousy) after I'd been 100% dairy free for a week or so. Hang in there!
@caloneis I'm sorry you and LO are having such a hard time.
If you are struggling with calories, you might think about seeing a dietician to help you put together some meal plans or strategies to get the nutrition you need. And If you haven't already, I would also ask the pedi for a rec to a GI specialist and/or allergist - we saw a pediatric gastroenterologist when DS was 6 mo and allergist at 12 mo. Did the pedi test for other possible causes of blood in the stool, like an infection? Since it's only been a couple of weeks with the other eliminations you might need to wait another week or two to see improvement. I know it's hard, hang in there and let us know if there's anything else we can do to help.
At this point I'm thinking, starting tomorrow I need to try to cut soy now too. Do you all think this seems like the best thing to do? Seems like the dairy would be all cleared out..
