Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Anybody else's 12 month old not saying any words?

I am just curious.  I read a post the other day and I can't remember which board I saw it on.  It seemed like everybody who posted had a 12 month old who was saying multiple words.  My DD just turned 12 months old the other day and doesn't say anything yet.  She jabbers all day long, but has no actual words.  I'm just wondering if anybody else has a baby around this age who isn't saying anything.  I feel like I'm usually pretty good at not comparing her to other babies, but this has me starting to a little bit.

  • DS1 didn't have any till the week before his 18 month appt.  As long as she is babbling she is fine.

  • My DD is 14 months and doesn't consistently say any words.  She will occasionally repeat something you say, but not often.  Mostly she babbles and points, and she knows a few signs.
  • My DS will be 12 months next week, and he doesn't have any "real" words yet. His pedi said she would like him to have at least one by 12 months. He's already in speech therapy for texture aversion, so we might be adding actual speech to the therapy soon. :(

  • DS wasn't speaking at 12 months, either.  Try not to worry!

  • My nearly 17 month old still isn't saying any words (other than mama and dada).  My ped recommended an evaluation sometime before his 18 month appointment and I just scheduled that.  I purposely waited a couple of months because I spoke to a few of my Mom friends and some of them said their kids didn't really start using words until closer to 18 months.  So, I'm not too concerned - he understands us, he does what we ask, etc., he's just not saying any words.  I'll be interested to hear what the eval says.

  • Don't stress! Every baby is different - DS1 was only saying "bah" when he was 1, but my DS2 is probably saying two words that we can recognize? And DS1 wasn't really talking until past two, but his receptive language (being able to understand what people said to him) was fine, which is what therapists look for anyway. hth!

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • I don't think my son said any words when he was 12 months old. In the past couple months his language has just exploded though. It'll happen when it happens was my philosophy. Pretty soon, I'm sure he won't stop talking all day long.
  • My DS had no words at 12 months, 2 or 3 words at 15 months, then a huge language explosion at 17 months.  Since he was a late crawler, late walker, bad sleeper, and still not a great eater, I am going to brag about what I can: he is WAY ahead now with language.  Don't worry.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • Neither of my girls really have any words yet. One says "Mahna Mahna" in context if you sing the song from the Muppets to her. And the other one has said "pat pat" in context while patting my arm.

They "talk" to each other all day long, and they have some signs they're pretty good at. But no consistent words yet.

  • My 15 month old doesn't have any.  She babbles all the time, gestures, understand what we mean when we ask her to do things (obviously this is limited).

  • My LO is 19, almost 20 months... Still doesn't say much. Momma, dadda, pappa, peez (please) and only when you make him.
  • We're a couple days away from 17mo and have no real words yet.  Possibly "hi", but that's it.  We are signing, however, and that will cause verbal language delay.

Actually, sign PAIRED with words will not "cause" a verbal language delay.  it is important tho, to make sure to pair words with each sign.  Say "more" when signing more, say "ball" when signing ball, etc.  Encourage LO to do the same.  Eventually, the sign will fade and the language will stay.  Otherwise, the language doesn't develop.  Sign is a great way to develop language, both receptive and expressive, if used correctly.
  • DD had no words at 12 mos with very limited babbling and no imitating.  She had no words at 15 mos and was evaluated by EI and started speech therapy.  She is 3 now and has since been diagnosed with a speech disorder.  Also, whoever said therapists look at receptive skills that is not really true.  Expressive skills are also important.  My DD has zero problems with receptive language and never has.  She still has a speech disorder.

DS had two words at 12 mos (hi and dog).

We speak two languages in our family so we are raising a bi-lingual kid. He is just over 12 months, babbles a lot but no real words yet. Although, our pedi assured us that bi-lingual kids start speaking later than others.

I know it's hard not to worry.  DS2 was babbling a little at 12M, didn't say actual words really until after 13M, but even then he didn't say them a lot.  His words picked up a bit at 15M.  At 20M he is combining words some.  Not saying much at 12M doesn't necessarily mean anything.

  • Ladies, this thread is from 2011
  • I don't care that it is an ancient thread, glad to see it anyway.  DS just turned 13 months and says zero words and zero gestures.  No pointing, no clapping, no waving.  Have spoken to a speech pathologist twice and she was not worried whatsoever.  The past 2 weeks he did just start imitating us a bit, by putting his toy phone to his ear, etc.

Our friend Lisa is very helpful with her one line, usually somewhat snarky comments.

DD didn't say anything until the last 2 weeks (she turned 14 months on the 3rd). She wasn't imitating voices either. All of the sudden, it's like she is having a language explosion. She is babbling, repeating words we say to her..it's sorta shocking to be honest. My DH and I were just talking about how 2 weeks ago she didn't say anything and now she is a chatterbox. She can't shut it off to go to sleep even! It's taking her a long time to stop practicing her new found skill of talking.
I also talked with a speech pathologist because I was worried and she wasn't concerned. I know it's easier said than done because I was in your shoes just 2 weeks ago and worried a lot but be patient, it'll come soon hopefully.
  • Eh, someone above also mentioned it was an old thread too...
