Big kid bed before or after baby arrives?

We are going to get DS a twin bed.

Baby #2 is due in early/mid November. Any insight on if we should move him before or after baby comes? (DS didn't sleep in his crib until 6-7 months old, probably will do the same with #2.) I don't want to turn his world upside-down even more than it will be.

  • We are waiting until after also, mainly because Jeffrey sleeps so well in his crib and hasn't started to try to climb out. I have heard stories of good sleepers turning into bad ones once the switch occurs so want to put that off for as long as possible!

  • Honestly with when you are due I would likely try to start the transition first. That way he is completely used to his "big boy" bed when the new baby comes.

I'm due in November as well and we are going to wait until after the baby is here. DS still does great in the crib so there is no reason to transition him just yet. If that changes in the next few months, then we'll deal with it then but no plans to move him as of now.

We got another crib. I have no desire to switch DD out of her crib until I have to - I figure, why make my life more complicated by giving her free rein of her room?

  • We are switching dd to the daybed setup since hers is convertible. Ds is due in June and we are hoping doing it before will make her feel special

  • My friend is due with twins in August.  Her DS just turned 2 in April.  They're moving him to a big boy bed before the twins come so he can get used to it and doesn't feel like he's being kicked out of the crib with all the other adjustments they'll have going on.

Also I know it is always the advice to be careful about not transitioning too close to baby arriving because of potential jealousy, but we moved DD from the nursery to her new room 3 days before DS ended up arriving, and she didn't care. We just told her that her old room was for babies and she got to move to the big girl room.

  • We are due in November, too. We bought a toddler bed last month figuring we'd start naps now and transition when baby came, but she decided that she was ready to move into the bed immediately. First night was a little weird, but she's doing great! We haven't turned back yet.

Thanks everyone! I think we will try to do it before and see how it goes. I hope it makes him feel special! Good thing is he already sleeps on a cot at daycare, so it won't be a completely foreign idea to him to not be in a crib.

    Fo realz yo.

Mina is teeny still so we just bought another crib for Baby #2.  She hasn't tried to climb out of her crib yet so I figure we still have a while until we convert it to a toddler bed.  Plus, I love that I can put her in her crib with books while I take a quick shower.
