Excess baby vomit

Our son is 1 week old & has had a few bouts of violent vomiting. It happens during nursing or right after & one time it had a little blood. He has vomited 5-6 times, and just wondering if any other moms have been through this,if anything helped resolve it or if some babies just vomit lots? I'm not talking spit up,it's the whole contents of his stomach. We have spoken with the doc & he isn't too concerned besides getting him pedialite & watching for any more blood, but I just wondered how common this is & if any moms who have been through this have any tips

Re: Excess baby vomit

  • I'm not sure about the blood in the vomit. I'd also be pretty alarmed by that.

Otherwise it sounds like reflux. Are you laying him flat after he eats? I would try not to move him too much after each feeding. Hold him until he is able to digest a bit (in a sitting up position) or sit him in something that isn't completely flat. Sometimes moving him to another seat alone can cause him to vomit. The dr didn't mention reflux?

  • Are your nipples bleeding? My midwife said if I crack and bleed DS could spit up some blood but it's just mine.

But I think projectile vomiting is not good, if it happens a lot. I don't remember the blurb off the top of my head.
  • If it's projectile like that then your pedi should be working to find a cause. Sounds like reflux but obviously I cannot diagnose that. Our chiro was the only thing that fixed DS's reflux. It never hurts to get a second opinion if you are worried but the dr isn't. How has he been doing with gaining weight?

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • I agree with @florassecret‌ and @pistolpackinmomma‌. Projectile vomiting more than a few times isn't good. We had it one time with DS but he had ingested too much milk too quickly. I would get another opinion. Good luck mama.

DD vomits if she gets too much too quickly, or if she's moved around after eating. We burp her, then we cuddle her so she's at an angle rather than laying her flat for about 20-30 mins. Since doing that, she hardly spits up.

Also, are you burping him too hard? DH burped DD a bit too hard the other day and ended up changing his jeans and cleaning the sofa.

  • Thanks for the advice everyone. He is gaining weight, peeing and pooping fine which is why he wasn't overly concerned. My nips have the odd scab so I'll keep an eye on any bleeding. Today (so far) has been vomit free from stopping & burping him 3-4 times throughout each feed, so I think he may have been getting too much too fast.

DS2 did the same thing this week.  Our pedi said there's a stomach virus going around, but as long as his temperature is regulated and he keeps making wet/poop diapers we should be ok.  Hope your little one feels better soon.  :/
