Viral infection?

So, my little guy had diarrhea since Sunday (that is now better), had a fever since Tuesday night which finally just broke this afternoon. He also has a stuffy nose, drooling a ton, and just extremely fussy. I took him to the doctor on Wednesday and he said it was a viral infection that we just have to wait out. And while I'm very happy his fever is gone today, he is sooo fussy and upset which is totally unlike him. I thought maybe teething but he has 4 top 4 bottom already and I can't see anymore. Also, yesterday and today he has been refusing to eat. He's breast fed and he's not really eating from me, and won't take a bottle of it either. He ate a little bit of baby food. I just don't know what to do, if I should take him back in. He's been screaming crying when trying to go to sleep too. Any help or similar situation would be so appreciated. Thank you!

Re: Viral infection?

  • I'm no help from experience, but my first thought was a possible ear infection. Dud the dr check his ears?

  • We just went through this about 2 weeks ago. I am sorry, I know how much it sucks.

So make sure you push fluids and do a little at a time. You can give pedialyte in a syringe 5ML's at a time if he is not interested in nursing. You want to keep hydrated and we were told at this point it doesn't matter the "quality" of fluids but you want "quantity". We were told 5ML's at a time for 15 minute intervals and if he handles that then you can up it to an ounce and then a couple of ounces. Make sure you are counting wet diapers. Even if they are barely wet then they count. I would watch for constipation now since he had diarrhea and he is not taking in very many fluids. My Pedi told me if he still has tears when he cries and wet diapers then we are not dehydrated. So those are two good clues.

I hope this helps! My guy was sick for about a week and a half. First he was vomiting, then diarrhea, then constipated. If you're in doubt just call your doc. I spoke to the nurse a few times during that week and a half and it really helped ease my mind. Hope he is feeling better soon!

Yep, checked the ears and said they looked normal so no ear infection. I just feel do bad and helpless! It wasn't his regular doc because she wasn't in that day. I might have to take him again on Monday if he's not better, just for peace of mind.

Thank you! It is rough! He's having wet diapers and tears so that's a good sign. It seems like we'll just have to wait. I just get worried if it's something bigger then I'm waiting and it could be getting worse.

My little guy had something like this, and the Dr. checked his ears and told us they looked great, but to watch him because it could easily and quickly turn into an infection. We were lucky that it did not, but it is possible that since Wednesday it has. I would definitely try to get him seen again. Good Luck!

I agree with this. It really does sound like ears. The infection could have developed since Wednesday. I would definitely go on Monday for a recheck if only for peace of mind. I hope he feels better!!

  • Poor little guy! I'd definitely keep up the fluids any way you can, and get in to see the doctor again ASAP. Little ones develop sickness so quickly, it's scary. Above all, listen to your mommy instincts.

  • Coming from personal experience, ears can look fine one day and flare up the next. Especially if there has been a stuffy nose. Good luck I sure hope your lo feels better quickly
