What are your thoughts on "Dumbo?'

It's going to play on Disney Jr. in 45 minutes, and I told my son I don't think we should watch it. He'll totally lose his shit twenty minutes in, he's way too empathetic to deal. I absolutely hated that movie when I was a child. I don't know how old I was when I saw it, maybe 5 or 6? It made me horribly sad. I still don't understand how it's a classic children's film, I think the story is just awful.

Re: What are your thoughts on "Dumbo?'

  • Yes, I agree. I feel this way about a lot of the older Disney movies. Like Fox and the Hound...very depressing. Dumbo is probably the saddest.

  • I would want to skip it too. We just went on the ride at Disney and the kids wanted to know all about the movie and why they haven't seen it.

I don't remember ever seeing Dumbo. However, I was surprised recently by how many Disney movies (that I did watch as a child) I won't show the kids any time soon.
  • Too sad for me.

  • Yeah it's a no-go in this house. My 4 year old cries at Lilo and Stitch. No way he'll deal with dumbo

  • I've never liked Dumbo.  I do like The Fox and the Hound, for some reason.

I agree, Snow White is like a horror movie!  DS1 was scared of Finding Nemo when he was little lol.  The classics I really like are Robin Hood, and Alice in wonderland.

  • It's one of DS's favorites and he went through a phase where he wanted to watch it every single day. ,it was much sadder for me to watch than for him.

  • I used to love that movie. I still like it a lot even though it's sad. I put it on for DS once when he was sick and he loved it until they captured the mom and then he said " I don't like this movie!" And wouldn't watch it. I don't blame him but I'll probably put it on again when he's older if he wants to watch it.

Snow White is Reese's favorite movies. She LOVES the scarier parts of movies. Seriously her favorite part of Snow White is when she is running through the dark and scary forest and falls down. She talks about "scary branches" all the freakin' time. If a movie has a part with scary woods---she loves it! She loves the Wizard of Oz for the same reason.

DS loves Dumbo. He hasn't watched it in awhile, but was one of the first real movies he watched.

I haven't seen Disney's Snow White since I was pretty little, but DS's preschool class was watching a different version when I picked him up the other day (the full day kids watch a show between lunch and nap). It was the sequence with the huntsman and they said "kill" like 15 times in the few minutes it took DS to get his stuff together to go. Creeeepy.

  • The only Disney movies we will be avoiding are Pinocchio and Alice in Wonderland. I saw each of them once as a kid and was so terrified I never finished them.

I hate Pinocchio, too. Not AIW though, I just thought it was weird. I don't show them fox and the hound.

  • I watch it, but honestly, I'm more amazed by the blatant racism and alcohol-fueled hallucinations than the "so sad!" parts.
This also reminds me of Pinocchio. I watched that again and I seriously sat there thinking "WTF".

As for Dumbo, it makes me cry legit tears. I can't watch it and I won't ever bring it up for A to watch.

    "Pink elephants on parade"? :-p

Ya, Dumbo is definitely on my "WTF Disney??" list....

  • I loved dumbo, but always cried when his mom sang that song to him behind bars.  I think it would still make me cry now.

  • I just watched Fox and the Hound with DS. I cried. Which made DS cry. So I suck.

He is more into Pixar movies, although he is starting to come around to older ones. Like Little Mermaid and Jungle Book.

  • Yeah, we actually haven't watched any classic Disney movies here.  I can't take the sadness either. My sister is constantly asking has our boys seen this or do they have this dvd and I'm like NO!  I can't stand watching those sad things.

There are a lot of Disney movies that I just don't think stand the test of time. I used to love Peter Pan, but now I can't believe the whole "what made the red man red" BS. And no way to dumbo. Also, speaking of hallucinations, remember Fantasia?? That crap gave me freaky nightmares!
Oh, I love Fantasia. My dad used to take me to see it every time it came to theaters. Its was our thing. Which part gave you nightmares? The Stravinsky?
  • I loved Fantasia too!! It's been many years since I've seen it but was thinking of it not too long ago. Very magical and kinda spooky? I mostly remember the brooms dancing. Lots of brooms!

That was Sorcerer's Apprentice. My favorite was the part with the centaurs, I think they used Vivaldi for it?
  • That's it, Beethoven. Thanks, Feffy.

Oh BTW the Fantasia I'm thinking of had Mickey Mouse. LOL does that sound right? He made the brooms dance. Remake?

Right, I meant, the music that piece is set to is called "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." But yes, it's the one with Mickey and the multiplying brooms.

LOL @ The Little Mermaid being an "older" Disney movie.
    Now I feel old
Lol! Older in relation to the Pixar generation of Disney movies. I was 5 or so when I saw Little Mermaid in the theater.
