OMG A TOOF

edited May 2014 in February 2014 Moms
So first off, I may need to reintroduce myself because I haven't played on TB for like three months! Whoopsies! Long story short, the baby appeared and then busy and then went on trips and then springtime after polar vortex and I shunned all internetz, but now I'm back to a routine (maybe kinda) so I get Bump time again! Woo!

Also, my baby is cute and fat and delightful and I wish all happy baby times for everyone out there on Feb 14 :-)

But the point of this post - my munchkin is 3 months and 2 days old and already has a tooth. It showed up a few days ago! I thought this teething business happened a few months down the road. Anyone else have babes with toofers coming in? (I apologize if there's already been a thread on this!)

Re: OMG A TOOF

  • I am wondering if my LO is teething. He's suddenly chewing on everything, fussy as hell, drooling on everything, and feels a bit warm. I ordered a Sophie the Giraffe teething toy because cute, so maybe it'll get used sooner than I thought.

    Welcome back!

    Hi Cauliflower!! Welcome back!

Can I be dumb and ask how to tell if your LO is starting to teeth? (Is that even grammatically correct? So tired.)

  • Welcome back!

We can feel a tooth through her gums (my sister confirmed it for me today, she's got 3 kids under 5 and knows what teeth feel like), but hasn't popped through yet.

Hi, I'm mostly a lurker now but we had teeth early too, at 2.5 months (he'll be 3 months on Wed). It's nuts. His mouth is too small to fit most teething toys, and he can't hold anything yet, but he sure likes my knuckles! Anyway, frozen wash cloths work well and can be made to fit by twisting the ends after you wet them. Congrats on first tooth! :)

My first teethed early too and lost her first tooth when she was barely five, so it will probably mean your LO loses teeth early too.

@Codypup - unusually fussy and drool city. My baby also chews his hands and growls at them in his sleep. He also literally chases my knuckles to chew on them and yell at them.My first would sometimes get a low grade fever when teething.
  • Im hoping that mine isnt (because ouch!), but I think its coming sooner than later.

  • Welcome back...

No teeth yet but I'm pretty sure little miss is starting to teethe as she is drooling a ton...I tried to feel but who am I kidding..I have no idea what I'm looking for until a tooth has popped through.

Drool is normal at this stage. They are making more saliva and literally don't know what to do with it.
Teething will have other symptoms too.

  • My LO was actually born with one! I'm curious when more will appear!
  • Oh wow I've heard of babies being born with teeth! Quite rare I think!

Yeah my l'il fella started drooling a lot a few weeks back, and then gnawing on anything and everything with his gums. I could tell his gums were bothering him.. and then lo and behold, a tooth!
  • Welcome back!!

I think we're a way out from teeth here. Drooly and chewing on things but I don't feel anything and he isn't fussy. DS1 he'd to get a red spot on the cheek on the side of his face the tooth was coming in and his nose would run like crazy. I wonder if this LO will get the dot.
  • My LO has been teething for a few weeks and I can see it starting in the front. She's drooling like mad (I'm talking entire front of her shirt soaked), chewing everything she can, and fussy/not sleeping as well.

Just waiting for it to break through!
  • Does anyone's LO actually chew on Sophie (things other than hands)? My LO is only starting to sort of grasp things (not really, only on her play mat or when we put it in her hands)...but I was gifted 3 Sophie's ... Might as well put them to use? I don't think she's teething yet but do they like to gnaw on her that much already? (LO will be 3 months this week)

Sorry for the sort of thread jack!

  • @TyrannosaurusLex‌ I don't think anyone will be as keen as your DH ;) all of our Sophie's are still in their boxes. I figured they were hopeless until she could actually hold things.

She also sort of creeps me out a bit. She's a very happy looking giraffe.

  • We discovered LO had a tooth coming in at 8 weeks!  You can tell by feeling their gums - you should be able to feel a little lump.  You'll know because it feels so different than the rest of their gum.   In our case, I didn't even notice until it was starting to break through.
My aunt is a dental hygienist and said that this early on a lot of times the teeth/tooth will move up and down in the gum before fully emerging.

Wow, I'm surprised to see how many of our LOs are already starting to teethe already!

I actually think we're starting as well.  Just in the past week she's starting drooling like crazy, chewing on everything, and rubbing her ear. Her cheek has been pink too, which I didn't realize was a sign. She's also been mad fussy, whereas normally I'd qualify her as just "fussy." I'm really hoping she doesn't get any teeth yet!  BFing is still hard enough -- I really don't want to add any teeth to the mix!!

We are finally having our 2 month pedi appt tomorrow at 10.5 weeks, so I'm going to ask him what he thinks.

  • We had a tooth pop through last week, LO was just shy of 13 weeks when it happened. Was exhibiting symptoms before then but being a FT mom didn't really put it together since she's so little. Anyhow, we've gone back to multiple night waking a since then...almost every hour. Anyone else dealing with/dealt with this and have advice on getting back to normal sleep schedule (for us consisted of one night waking/ feeding around 3am) and then up in the morning around 5:30. Never thought that would be a routine I would miss!

blscholl1645: He basically said that babies can sometimes feel their teeth coming well before (like months before) the teeth appear, so it's possible that she's starting to technically "teethe," but that we shouldn't expect any teeth for a while.

  • We have a tooth popping through, but not one of the middle upper or middle lower. Looks like a canine, which Dr. Google says usually come in around 16 months?! Of course it's the sharp tooth. Feels great on my nips... :-w

Same here. Ours is the lower right canine. Unbelievable! My ped says it's unusual, but does happen. She also said for some babies night time is more painful, and sometimes slightly elevating their heads during sleep helps...
