3rd or 4th degree tear mommas - come on in...

I had a 3rd degree and am now having the wonderful experience of pelvic floor physical therapy. Anyone else have the pleasure of this humiliation?

Nothing like someone you just met telling you, "I'm going to do a rectal exam, if you don't mind." Well yes, I do mind, but I know I need it. Sigh.

  • I had a 3rd degree but everything healed, though I did need a couple extra stitches at my 6 wk appt. What does your therapy involve?

Strengthening the sphincter muscle that tore. You know those incontinence issues they say you're at risk of getting with this kind of tear? Yeah. I started experiencing that lately. No bueno!!!!
  • I fear this will be me.... I was fine at first now I'm having occasional gas incontinence. My OBGYN told me to start PT in July if it hasn't healed on its own.

  • Oh man so sorry you have to go through that. :(

    Thanks, Jordan. :)

Penelope - Keep an eye on it. Mine started as the gas issue and developed from there. And same here -- I was great at first but in April, it suddenly came on. Hope you don't have to go the PT route and things get better for you!
  • Ugh, I'm so sorry you're dealing with this!  I had a third degree episiotomy/tear, but fortunately it seems to have healed ok.  I've noticed that when I "have to go", that I can't hold it anywhere near as long as I used to be able to, so I've been a bit paranoid.  I'm hoping it will improve over time, and maybe I can remember to do some kegels to get things back in shape!  I hope PT helps you!

One thing I learned is that there's apparently a "right" and "wrong" way to do kegels. I always thought kegels were kegels. You have to make sure you are isolating the muscles in the pelvic floor without using abdominal muscles or any muscles in your buttocks. I had just gotten used to squeezing *everything* down there to hold things back, which apparently really isn't helping the situation.
  • Ugh, I'm sorry you all are dealing with issues still.

Thanks, August. Love my baby boy but I sure wish his head hadn't been so dang big. :)

We had dinner with friends tonight and they commented on how LO's head didn't seem big and I was like "ohhh no. It's big."

I have a prolapsed bladder and rectum due to my 3 big babies. The weakening started after my 4th degree tear from foreceps with my first baby (10 pd 1 oz), and I did not officially prolapse until my 3rd baby (my Dec 2013 9 pd 14 ozer). Anyway, I am in PT right now and it has done a world of good. Honestly, I wish I had gone into PT with my first - it may have helped me avoid this prolapse. IMO anyone who has a severe tear can benefit from some pelvic floor PT. And after childbirth, my modesty is pretty much gone anyway. I am a big pelvic floor PT advocate. I am recommending it to my girlfriend who had a severe tear in March.

Oh my goodness! You poor thing! Glad the PT is helping. I'm hopeful it will be as beneficial for me!
