Silent reflux??

I'm starting to think my son has silent reflux. His breast smells bad, gags during and after feedings. Rarely spits up , makes this weird noise affer eating sounds like he's trying to clear his throat and is always hungry. When he cries he arches his back in pain. Anyone dealing with this?? Or have any experience with reflux??

  • My son had silent reflux. It was awful. You would hear it come up and then he'd gag and make a yucky face and then you'd hear him swallow it back down and he'd scream. Heartbreaking. It causes more discomfort and more esophageal damage because it burns both ways. He also would comfort eat (he was FF) because milk going down felt soothing.

  • Would is recommended for silent reflux? I think our little one has it as well.
  • My LO has silent reflux. Little spitting up, but as pp described he was gagging and coughing and then swallowing it back down. At 3 wks you would have thought he had a cough bc it was choking him so badly. He is ff but it started when I was bf'ing. The pedi said she felt more comfortable going straight to Zantac bc of the severity of it and I agreed. Within a wk it was 90% better. He still has some reflux at night but not nearly as bad. Remember to keep him upright during and after feedings. She also recommended the RnP at night.

  • We.are dealing with the same thing. The pediatrician recommended that I cut out dairy and eggs from my diet to see if that helps, but I haven't noticed a difference. One end of her pack n play is elevated for sleeping and she spends a lot of time upright after meals. We go back to the Dr. This week.
  • This is happening to us right now!! Blakley is 6 wks and for the past week it has been hell and out of the blue completely random! Coughing, gagging, miserable after eating, comfort eating to help throat, and constant clearing of the throat! :( I got a prescription for Zantac I'm praying it'll give her some kind of comfort!
  • Forgot to mention I feed her sitting up and she'll only sleep in her rock and play now because it's elevated. I was thinking she had gas but it's obvious now it's more than that.
  • Just went to the pedi today and he has (gerd) acid reflux.. He was put on alimentium .. Dr said he wanted to wait on the Zantac but tonight been hell! Thinking I'm going to call tomorrow for that prescription. The reflux seams to be getting worse ;-(
  • Zantac did nothing for my DS and ended up on Prevacid solutabs so just keep that in your back pocket. Zantac worked well for a friend of mine. They do different things and the Prevacid worked better for him.

  • My dd has started grunting and sounding like she's trying to clear her throat, I didn't know this was reflux!! Bad parent!!
Shall mention next time we go to dr!
  • @sayysayy13‌ our pedi switched us to allimentum with DD. It definitely made her reflux worse. It's thinner, so it makes sense that it would. Now with DS she mentioned it and I just flat said no. They say to give it 3 or 4 days in a new formula, but I don't think we even made it that long it was so bad.

  • You have gotten some good advice already but also there is a thread "reflux treatment" at the bottom of this page with some good advice in it.

All I can add is when you keep your LO upright but sitting down keep them slightly reclined. They are too young at this point, but the Bumbo seat used to make my DS spit up a ton. Also, elastic waist bands or fastening his diaper too tight around his belly. And something like the RNP to sleep in would really help.

My DS had to go on Prevacid which does not stop the spitting but relieves the discomfort so he could at least sleep without screaming his head off.
