Bouncing on the Ball

What exactly is the bouncing on the ball supposed to do?
I bounce my daughter to sleep twice a day (nap/night). She was colicky in the beginning and it was the only way to calm her down and get her to sleep and she still loves it and is 20 months old, lol.
I hope it will bring on labour sooner?

Re: Bouncing on the Ball

  • After I bounced on mine for the first time she moved down and I noticed I dropped the next day but I'm not sure that is true for everyone.

  • Been bouncing for weeks and it hasn't done shit. 38.3 weeks and baby is still high and cervix is closed. It does, however, help immensely with the pelvic and rectal pressure.

The very amazeballs @bankerbsn gave me the tip to roll my hips in a circular motion on the ball in both directions.  It has truly done wonders for my hip pain and pelvic bone pain!

ETA:  She also said that it helps get baby in good anterior position.

I bounced on it yesterday for the first time, and this morning was the first morning that my pelvic bone didn't feel like it was going to crack in two.  Not sure if it's coincidence or not.

Probably not a coincidence! I've been finding it really helpful this past week, too.

The purpose of using the ball is that you sit on it in such a way that it allows your hips to open up and the uterus to fall forward, into a more natural and comfortable position. That helps relieve a lot of the pressure and it can potentially help get the baby down where it needs to go.

It's mostly for comfort, relief, and pain management. It's not to induce labour.

ETA: a friend said that bouncing on it while in labour helped her. I don't bounce on it much right now. But the pelvic rocking is really good for you, as @jschwind22 mentioned.

  • I roll and do figure 8's. Baby has definitely dropped but it really helps with my hip pain.

  • I've also heard it strengthens your ab and back muscles which can help with pushing.

A friend if mine was religious about the ball but it didn't move her baby down.. Instead her water broke prematurely which lead to a complicated delivery. I feel like it is good for hip and pelvis pressure to sit on for a but but I will not be using it otherwise as not to risk cord prolapse during labor with my baby who had also not dropped.

I seriously doubt that the ball was the cause of her water breaking... If contractions, sex, cervical checks, and a host of other activities don't do it I doubt sitting on a ball would even be on the radar as a cause...

It's a great way to get baby in a good position for birth (anterior). It can relieve pressure in the pelvis & hips as others have noted. But most importantly it's a great tool during labor when going med-free.
