LO hates pacifiers

I have tried two different kinds. She would not even take the gumdrop. I got her to take the MAM and she seems to like it at first but when she realizes it's not the real thing she gets mad! Totally ruins the whole soothing concept. I am tired of my boobs being her soothie but I guess I am stuck for the time being.

Anyone else's LO hate the pacifier and did they eventually come around?

Re: LO hates pacifiers

  • DD doesn't hate them, just greatly dislikes them. Once in a blue moon she will take one...from DH. Never from me. She also won't take a bottle of expressed milk from me, but will for DH.

Maybe you would have better luck if SO gave it? As much as it sucks to be used as a pacifier, just remember your baby is saying they need you. They prefer you. Bonus? We don't have to fight them to get rid of pacifiers. No one year old waking around talking with a pacifier hanging out if their mouth!

  • I've tried 4 different kinds and LO won't take them. I don't mind if I'm his pacifier for now, but I would like for him to take one eventually so he has a way to self-soothe when I'm not around (especially at daycare). He took one very briefly from DH. We just keep trying!
Our dd used a soothie until around 18m, mostly at naps. I didn't want her to be one of those kids who had one for way too long. She gave it up easily at 18mo and we had no issues.

  • We tried every kind Walmart had. She will only take Avent and only when she's really tired or mad.
  • My LO got mad and spit it out. Haven't tried multiple brands yet.

So far we've tried Nuks and Mams. She spit out the Nuk every time but she'll usually take the Mam and keep it in for awhile - if she's not too pissed.

  • @Kbmac‌ -my DS was a pacifier addict and we sent his binkies to the Binky Fairy on his 3rd birthday. It actually went pretty well and he was totally on board with it until bedtime that night when he screamed his head off. But he eventually fell asleep and after that first night - no more pacifier - he never asked for them again.

I guess if DD ultimately doesn't take a pacifier it's ok- there have only been a handful of times when I really wished she would take one. I just hope this doesn't mean I'll have trouble getting her to take a bottle!

  • Both of my first two weren't interested until they were probably 1.5-2 mos old. They both only took to the Playtex orthodontic kind-the kids either have the same mouth or the pacis are very much like my nipples ;)

  • She likes a pacifier, but only in the car. So far the winner is the Mam.

  • LO seems to like the Avent Soothies. DS1 never took to a pacifier, but I didn't try very hard with him either. At least we never had to take them away from him.

Paci veterans, is there a version of the Soothie for older babies? I know lots of other brands come in 0-3, 3-6, 6+, etc but I haven't seen any bigger Soothies. Do you just switch brands when they're older?

Maybe you could try the "paci fairy". Sorta like the tooth fairy idea , pacis are taken for new babies ( LO if u think your dd would respond ok to that) and a big kid toy is left behind.

We did this with DD when she was 2 she loved it, but wanted to see the new baby with her "pa-pa" /:)
