2013 most popular baby names

The social security administration put out their list of the most popular baby names from 2013 today.

I'll admit, DH and I were waiting to see the list before we finalized a choice for this LO. Anyone else use it as a reference? Does anyone use it to eliminate names?

I looked at it today.

With DD, we made our list of possible names without looking at any lists. We didn't want that to have any influence on what we thought was right for our baby.

THEN...the list of possible names for Will & Kate's royal baby came out and one of our girl names was on it. I started looking after that.

There was one boy name on the list that we thought might be ok, but it isn't high on the list. Still trying not to let it have too much influence on our decision.

2 of my top 3 names are in the top five... But I suspected that. And we are leaning towards Name number 3.

We definitely used that and other lists like it as a reference when looking at names. Anything too popular is out for us. I'm not looking for something too weird or "unique" but I always liked having a name that not a lot of other people had but still everyone had heard of and everyone could pronounce.

To each his own though! Those top names are popular for a reason, they are certainly nice ones.

Both of our girls' names are well below the top 100 mark (Paige and Camille).

We're sticking with Zoe. It's fairly popular (31), and even more so when combined with the other spelling (Zoey, 24), but we don't care. I've actually never met a Zoe(y) in person and I've only know of two under the age of five that I've heard of through family/friends/acquaintances.

We are naming dd Isabella, it's just because of personal tastes. We haven't let popularity or pop culture sway us either way with our other kids either. We only know one Isabella and she lives on the other side of the country.

First thing I said when I saw the list was dagnabbit. William is #5, but we are naming him after someone important to us, not because it's popular. So no change for us. Oh well.

We are currently debating between Liam and William (to be called Liam) for a boy and if we were having a girl I'd name her Emma in a heartbeat. Some names are just classic and I wouldn't let their popularity deter me from using them.

This exactly... Our last name is super common. We were definitely looking for a name that you've heard of but is not used a million times... We settled on Ivy Mae (Mae is for my grandma) for now, at least. athough thanks to Beyoncé, it may we jumping up soon! Hopefully not

I'm surprised Elizabeth is in the top 10 for girls. I love that name, but DH doesn't. Our girl name is Ella. It's not a "made up" name, so I don't mind using it, even though it's getting pretty popular. Our boy name is James, which is definitely classic.

We named our 2 boys Nathaniel (Nate) and John (Johnny). They are definitely not trendy right now.

It's funny how a lot of people like to stay away from super popular names (I'm one of them).

We are trying to stay away from super popular names, but we're having such trouble coming up with a girl name that we both love and feel is right that at this point I think we'd keep one even if it was really popular.

I also think it's hilarious how so many of the names poo-pooed on the names board are not high on the list, yet ones the people recommend after poo-pooing names are DEFINITELY high on the list.

In 2012, Amelia was 30-something in CA. I wonder when they will release by state data? I don't see us changing names (it was SUCH a struggle to arrive at these two) but I wish they weren't so popular...

It'll be released May 15th. It said it somewhere in small print. I almost missed it, too.

I read about this somewhere, too; the trend towards less-popular names means that even the most popular names aren't as common as they used to be. For example, in New York state:
1960: #1 for males: 8939 boys named Michael; #1 for females: 4628 girls named Mary
2012: #1 for males: 1384 boys named Michael; #1 for females: 1406 girls named Sophia
And the #100 girl's name for 2012 in New York had less than 200 babies with that name - in the WHOLE state ALL year.

Makes me feel better about cutting out fewer names. If I really, really loved a certain name and had liked it forever, I wouldn't cut it just because it was a really popular name. But I don't feel that way about any names, so slightly-less-popular is what we're going for.

That's really interesting and it really puts it in a different perspective.

I'm really sad that Charlotte is #11. I chose it because it's a classic Southern name, and I hate that it has become trendy. But we are already set on it, so it's not changing.

I did look back to the year I was born, and my name was #5 that year. I only knew one other girl with my name growing up, so maybe there won't be a ton of Charlotte's in her classes.
