21 Weeks, Contractions, Cervical Exam

I am 21 weeks and had been having contractions over the past couple days. Yesterday, my OB had me go to L&D since some were coming closer together than 30 minutes. That freaked me out. I wasn't concerned until they told me that.

Anyway, I went to L&D to monitor baby, contractions, and check my cervix. Of course, contractions stopped while I was there. Ugh. They also checked my cervix (it was really uncomfortable) and said that all was good. He said that if I have more than 4 an hour for two or more hours in a row to come back.

The contractions have more or less stopped, just one every couple hours or more, but this morning when I peed there was a blob of something in the toilet. Could it be lube from the exam? I'm getting worried that it's my mucous plug and maybe the doc triggered movement when he checked it?

I have been a bit crampy this morning, but other than that and the blob, I haven't noticed anything else off today.

I just need someone to ease my mind and tell me that if my cervix was fine yesterday, it can't be my mucous plug.

This whole process has me so stressed, which is no good for baby! I need to be less of a worrier.

Re: 21 Weeks, Contractions, Cervical Exam

  • I had exactly the same thing happen at 28 weeks. Of course everything stopped when I stepped foot in the hospital but I went in and was being monitored. I had a cervical check and everything was fine! Anytime I had a cervical check throughout pregnancy, I would always get that gross lube discharge. Yep.. it's kind of nasty. I really wouldn't worry much. I always had increased discharge after the checks and I didn't actually lose my mucous plug until I was well into labor and the doctor broke my water.
Of course if you have bleeding, heavy cramping or contractions, I would give the doctor a call but in the meantime, try to relax and take it easy for awhile.

  • Thank you, it helps to hear other people dealing with the same! If I were far enough along for her to be ok if I had to deliver early, I'd be less worried. I am a crazy worrier anyway!!

They did say there's a chance of spotting after the exam, but I didn't really think about other forms of discharge or any leftover lube being up there lol.

  • It's possible to regrow a mucus plug if its lost early too. I lost part of mine at 30 weeks with DS but all was well. It doesn't indicate labor is impending. I went through the same issues with DS and eventually I had to be induced to get the lil guy out.

Bolded: Unfortunately we cannot do this for you because we did not check your cervix. If the doctor said everything is fine then go with that. Trust your doctor's word over a bunch of internet strangers. Just take it easy and try not to stress out.

  • Sorry! not sure why it posted so many times
  • Stress won't harm your fetus, at least not worry. Mucus plugs can regenerate. You could just have excess discharge. I know it is a mind fuck, but try not to psych yourself out.
