Waitressing

Okay so I am a photographer by day and occasionally wait tables at night to make extra money. I have worked for cracker barrel for 6 years on the side and pick up shifts as I want and need them. My DH thinks I shouldn't wait tables while im pregnant, but I am not lifting anything heavy and I feel making some extra money before baby is born is a great thing. He has a great job and we are really okay without me working tables, but I hate being home all the time, and its only like once or twice a week that I pick shifts up. What do y'all think??

Re: Waitressing

  • I was a waitresses when pregnant with DS until I was about 7/8m and then thankfully my boss let me be her office assistant. Some days were great and others were just too busy and exhausting. I would discuss it with your boss (maybe don't work the busy shift, and have a backup server if you arnt feeling up to it) Use extra caution, I was always paranoid I would spill hot soup on myself. If you can make extra money and are up for it, why not? If you feel comfortable, go for it!

Yummy Crackle Barrel!  It seems like the wait staff to the ones I have been to use runners a good bit to bring the food out so I can see where you can avoid heavy lifting.  I would say continue to work there until you are uncomfortable if that is what you want to do.

Also, just wanted to tip my hat to any momma to be that has to work on her feet.  I am in awe!

I love Cracker Barrel. Oh man...their food is so so good, and you can shop while you wait! ;). That's the restaurant I was in when I used the mens restroom by mistake (some of you might remember THAT thread).

I would waitress as long as you're enjoying it and not getting too wiped out. If it concerns DH, ask your doctor. He'll probably look at you like you're being silly...because it's mostly about how YOU feel...but you can always preface it with "My husband isn't sure I should continue waitressing." ;)

  • Do it because you are up to it and enjoy making the extra cash/getting out.
Don't do it when it runs you down, becomes too much and/or becomes a stressor for you or baby.

I like the pp idea about mentioning it to your doctor to quell your DH's fears.

  • I waitress/bartend/manage a very busy sports bar and grille, sometimes I'm on my feet for 8~10 hours. As long as you are healthy and not feeling overwhelmed and stressed, go for it!!!

  • Agreed. As long as your body/baby is ok with what you're doing, have at it. Just no carrying really heavy trays!

  • Go for it. Yes, waiting tables can be physically exhausting (I did it for years, and once wore a pedometer during my shift... I walked TEN miles.) But our pregnant bodies are not meant to be in stasis. Plenty of moving, bending, and stretching is good for you and good for baby. Your body may even thank you with a short, less-painful labor!

I totally would continue doing it as long as you feel up to it.  I work retail a couple nights a week and DS2. I worked all the way up to the week I had DS2 (although slightly modified for the last couple month. No ladders or heavy lifting towards the end.)
