3rd Trimester

Swollen feet :(

Hi ladies -

I know it's normal to have swollen feet and hands during pregnancy, but until 2 days ago, that just appeared at night for me and was gone by the morning. In the last couple of days, the swelling on one of my feet won't go down. Is anyone else experiencing that? Anything that can be done? I can barely fit my foot into my shoes!

Dealing with the same thing but both feet :/ yesterday, was really hot here so I'm assuming weather can have more of an effect. I just bought some peppermint cooling foot lotion off of Amazon and it helped but I'm going to stick it in the fridge to cool more. Maybe try a frozen cool wash cloth. I've also read when you massage to push the fluid back up toward your knees and to elevate above your heart. I've been swimming every other day and that's helping too. GL but definitely ask your doc if you're concerned. One foot is a bit strange unless you rely heavily on that foot.

Weather does play a role in it. The hotter it gets the more I swell. My doctor informed me to increase my water, keep feet elevated as much as possible. Also my left foot swells more than my right foot. If you are concerned I would contact your doctor.

  • I live in Colorado and the worst of my swelling was in February and March.. it was snowing a lot! I can imagine it would have been worse if it had been hot but my hands and feet were ridiculously swollen and I was in no way able to fit into any type of ballet flat (I still wear those in the winter..). Nothing helped at the end of my pregnancy but before it was really terrible, drinking a TON of water did help. So did elevating my feet- especially in bed at night.
It's possible it won't get much better until after your baby is born. I reached the point of no return at about 35 weeks. But all swelling was completely gone a week after my son was born :-)

  • Drink more water, lots more water! I had the same problem and I increased how much water I was drinking every day and the swelling went down and has not returned.

  • Swelling in just one foot and not the other is NOT normal! It could be a sign of a blood clot. Please call your doctor.

If it wer both feet I would suggest elevating your feet and soaking in a cool bath with Epsom salt.

  • Thanks ladies - now the other one is swollen too, so I guess that's good news. I called the doc, they said "welcome to being pregnant". Now, running between kitchen and bathroom, filling up on water :)

Drink LOTS of water. I drink at least a gallon a day. I live in Arizona, and this is my second pregnancy in the summer here. The only time I swell is if I'm not drinking enough water.

  • Moved from WA to GA just last week and my swelling has gone way up. I have one of those starbucks cups with the lid and straw I'm constantly filling up. Ice does not melt in those things. I also limit the time I spend on my feet and try to elevate them. Going from 55 degree to 90 degree days sucks. My shoes don't fit after two hours on my feet. Good luck!

  • My left foot was swollen much bigger than my right foot for weeks....now the right one is catching up. My doctor didn't really have an explanation, but I guess it's normal. She just said to elevate them and stay hydrated. I bought black stretchy ballet flats to wear to work since my regular shoes are too constricting now. Got them at Payless for cheap.
  • I feel you. Mine started this week swelling. My hands too. My right foot is a little more swollen than my left weird. Weather here is getting warmer and I am on my feel all day. Elevated feet drink lots of water. That suppose to help. I put mine in an Epsom salt bath last night. Felt good.
Feel better. Right now my left hand is pins and needles.

  • My left foot swelled more than my right and it definitely got worse at the end of my PG. You can but relatively inexpensive compression stockings or knee highs at any drug store rather than waiting for a prescription. I got he knee highs and they helped a lot.

Also, if you get fluids during delivery, your swelling could be even worse after you have your LO and continue for up to 2 weeks.

  • Will just lend some handy input for warning signs to look for (I'm a physician assistant in the ER).  It's normal to have one side swell slightly more than the other, but any significant change in size from one lower extremity compared to the other is more worrisome.  Pregnancy is a high-hormone state which increases your risk for blood clots.  Significant swelling on one side along with possible thigh/calf pain, redness of the skin, or skin that noticeably warmer to touch than the other side are all symptoms of a blood clot.  If this starts to occur, please call your doctor and/or go to the ER for an ultrasound of your leg to rule out a DVT.

Yes. That will cause additional swelling.
