Being induced at 39 weeks due to gestational diabetes ... Anyone induced?

My doc is sending me to be induced on Monday because baby girl is getting big (measuring 8.5 lbs) and I have gestational diabetes .. Problem is I'm not dilated at all and she's still high up and hasn't dropped enough .. Anyone else been induced? If so how long did it take for your LO to get here ??

  • Might I suggest some reading of ACOG's guidelines on macrosomia & induction if you're not happy about induction...? My induction was chaotic & painful but I opted for no pain medication. I'd ask for your Bishop's score which will give you an idea of the odds of it being successful.

  • With what you've mentioned (no dilation and high), your bishop's score probably isn't favorable for an induction. You may be in for a very long and painful induction or a c/s. I was induced with my first (pre-e), but am not inducing this time if I can help it. Pitocin is a mean biznitch.

  • She's been averaging almost a lb a week so by Tuesday she would be at 9.5 lbs. I will be opting for epidural and pain meds so not too worried about the pain but he did mention c/s as a last resort if its unsuccessful. He's worried about her shoulders and said wen if I try vaginal delivery a c/s is still possible to prepare me ... T this point I just want her here healthy and don't care how she gets here ... @ kimbuss22 good grief 3 days?!? Looks like it'll be a long road for me ... Hoping she drops over the weekend ... Sigh

I was induced with both pregnancies due to low fluid (I'm was also GD for both). DD1 @ 39w and DD2 @‌ 37w

I think it has a lot to do with how ready your body is and your build more then baby size.

DD1 I wasn't dilated or effaced, but she was low. I had Cervidil, fully dilated in 7 hours and then it took 3 hours to push her out after I got the epi. She was 8 lb 13 oz and I had no issues delivering her and no tearing, etc.

DD2 I was 1-2 cm and 50%. Aftet the 12 hours of Cervidil I had progressed to about 3 and then had to have pitocin. That stuff is the devil so I ended up with the epi and delivered her after 17 hours total. She was 7 lbs 14 oz and only tool about 20 minutes of pushing.

If your GD is well controlled and there are no other issues with your baby, placenta, etc. I would be hesitant to move forward with induction.

  • With DS, I was induced from 0 at 36w3d. They told me it could take up to 36 hours. My first contractions happened 8 hours after they induced. DS was born 15 hours later, (I stalled for awhile after the epidural) but was relatively easy. Personally, if they induced me again, I would be okay with it, but am hoping DD comes of her own accord. (I'm 36w6d today)

I was induced at 39 weeks for GD. I was dilated to a 1 from the membrane sweep the night before. Started with cervadil for 4 hours dilated to a 3. The broke my water and started pitocin and the whole process was about 19.5 hours til he arrived. Nasty back labor and had the epi at 5 I couldn't handle it anymore. Pitocin is no joke!

I was induced with DD1 at 41 weeks, barely had any progress and my labor was about 20 hours.
My induction with DD2 was much faster (7hrs), but I was 4cm and 70% effaced to start.

  • Induced with both DDs.

DD1 (41 weeks) started cervadil previous night, was not dilated prior to going in. Started pit the following morning at 5am, had DD at 7:33 PM that night.

DD2 (38 weeks) started cervadil previous night, gave me a generous 1cm. Started pit at 7am, had her at 10:30am same day.

  • Not induced for GD but when I was induced I had three doses of gel and nothing. The three doses of cytotec. Third dose kicked me into labor. Had DS 8 hours later.

  • I was induced (only a week ago, haha)
I was 2 cm dilated when I went in. After one dose of cytotec, was having contractions but my cervix tried to close. They broke my water and started me on pitocin. Over all it was a pretty long and painful labor because I my cervix wasn't favorable. (I labored for 19 hours and pushed for about 40 minutes)
Good luck, I hope this helps!
