greased pig

How the heck am I supposed to change him? I've had to pin him down with my legs and feel awful about it! I've even tried "modeling" a good fast change using stuffed animals ("good Simba! Lay down..."). It's getting harder by the day. Any tricks you all have learned?

  • I give oliver a stuffed bird that he only gets during diaper changes so it doesn't lose it's appeal.

  • I give P something to play with or chew on. If that fails, I give him socks or a clean diaper as a distraction.

I give LO a toy for distraction. I make it a game for myself and always try to beat my last record of how fast I can change her without a total meltdown.
  • I've given him toys, books, bottles, changed him in every location (my bed, the floor, different rooms, changing table, carpet, hard floor, etc). He still freaks more often than not. I've tried making it a game and playing with him or singing to him and still no bueno. I don't want it to turn into a forever problem. Poop shaming? Gah. I need to have the speed change Olympics or something.
  • This might be really hard, but could you try letting him stand up while you change him? We haven't done that for diapers, but I've discovered that Luke is much more cooperative and happy *everywhere* (changing clothes, sponge baths, stroller, etc.) if he's not being made to lie down or recline. It might be difficult for a poop, but if you're just changing wet pants you might pull it off without making a mess.

This kid may not have a lot of bowel, but he has plenty of guts!
DS born at 34 weeks with (surprise!) gastroschisis turned short bowel syndrome.
131 days in the NICU, 7 trips to the OR, G-button, daily TPN....
We are impatiently awaiting the day we can say goodbye to his girlfriend Ivy for good.
  • Yes we've also done standing. Lol. I guess Isaac is just going to be that kid... I'm in for it!
  • We have a strap on our table. The strap plus a random item usually helps enough to change him. Usually it has to be something random too, or he doesn't care about it.
  • Fart noises & kisses FTW. :P

Jae is obsessed with wipes. He likes putting them over his face and in his mouth. They distract him long enough for a change. Or I give him an extra diaper to mess with.

I think I posted this same thing like a week ago :)  I now use my legs when she's particularly squirmy, otherwise there's a risk of flying poop! toys/objects hardly work because she loves throwing them off the table and flipping to see where it went.  So that just makes it worse...

  • Thanks guys! @elyse05‌ I'm sorry I missed that thread!

I have always changed him on the floor but now I change him on his changer and strap him in.

  • I usually give him a toy or a book. Or something he knows he's not supposed to have, like my keys or an phone. He's usually entranced by the forbidden object.

I also sing his favorite song. He usually stops screaming and wriggling for a minute to stare at me.
  • Usually a spare diaper or book does the trick but sometimes... It's an all out wrestling match.

  • I sing :)

  • We've been struggling with this for about a week now too abd nothing seems to help. He screams bloody murder anytime we go near his changing table or even if I lay him down anywhere. He immediately flips over on his belly and tries to crawl away. Think I'll try the standing up trick unless he's poopy.

  • it used to help to constantly mix up wher I changed her, but that does nothing now. then we went through a stage where I played what does the cow, cat etc say and made the noise in a fun way. but she got mostly over the animal noises this week, and it does not keep her happy for an entire diaper change. sometimes singing helps, or playing where's my nose. but she put up some major fights today, two of the changes involved me wiping her while she was on her tummy, then flipping her back over to clean the front very fast. sometimes giving her something new and that looks like she should not have it works.

  • Raspberries on the tummy. Singing. Tickle games where I tell rhymes. (slowly, slowly, very slowly goes the garden snail (while inching your finger) slowly slowly, very slowly up the wooden rail...Quickly quickly very quickly runs the little mouse - (while running fingers quickly and tickly) quickly quickly very quickly in his little house!)

Also good for a giggle - (and at least a moment of stillness) Jelly on the plate, jelly on the plate...wiggle waggle wiggle waggle jelly on the plate.)

His big brother loves saying the second one, too.

Toys or silly mommy songs.. but when she's just not having it I pin her little ass.  :)  She's such an escape artist.

For @2012ames and all others that have to resort to changing standing up - I just got a box of Huggies Little Movers Slip ons and they are amazing. So easy to pull off (obviously only wet diapers) and pull on. Highly recommended!
