Off bottle and cup at bedtime

my son has been off the bottle during most of the day for a few months, he wanted it at nap n bedtime. We recently stopped bottles all together but at bedtime we give him a cup....is that okay? Or how can I get him to not take a cup or bottle at bedtime......he doesn't and never took a pacifier or sucked thumb or fingers....he is 17 months

Re: Off bottle and cup at bedtime

  • We still do a sippy of milk when he gets up and a sippy before bed - but I've been slowly moving it up and decreasing the amount. Right now he gets it about 30 min before bed and it's only 4oz. But he loves his "milky," and I use it to start his bedtime routine. I don't really think it's a problem at all.

  • I am not help! Lol... My 14 month still takes two daily bottles in the morning and at bedtime. And she is still using her paci. For some reason she will only drink her milk out of the bottle. And she'll only drink warm milk at that.
  • we still do a bottle right when he wakes up and right before bed. we also use a paci. i have no interest in stopping either. the morning bottle will be easy to drop, so we will start there.

    Water or milk?

Water isn't a problem at all.

Teeth should be brushed after milk.

This. When I stopped giving DS bottles and switched to cups, I still gave milk out of a sippy while we sat in the rocking chair but I always brushed his teeth after. I enjoyed rocking him and didn't want to stop. Now, if he even wants milk, he has it WAY before he even goes to bed.

If you want to keep giving a cup of milk,  I say go for it, just brush his teeth.

Same here. We stopped giving DS a bottle last week (Yay! He is almost 18 months and I took advantage of DH being out of town to cease all bottles. DS was more than ready, DH couldn't give up the bottle). We still give him milk in a sippy at dinner and if he doesn't finish the milk, give it to him 15-30 minutes later, right before bed. Then we brush his teeth and start his bedtime routine.

There is nothing wrong with milk at bedtime, just be sure to brush his teeth afterwards.

  • we stopped bottle about a month ago (13mo) and we give a sippy cup of milk before bed. Im trying to transition the sippy to have only at dinner time and go straight from bath to book time and then bed. Your LO will tell you if you are not accomidating his/her needs!
  • I give quite a bit of milk throughout the day so it's more spread out, as opposed to him needing it at specific times. It's still kind of a habit though, because he's constantly asking "cup pease!" They don't actually need too much milk at this age if they're eating other kinds of dairy, so I offer water at bedtime.
