LO's head

We had Wyatt's follow up appointment today at a new office with a new doctor because the other place isn't doing helmets anymore. It went really well and this doctor explained everything a lot better.

Insurance authorization will take a week so as soon as that is done Wyatt will go in for head scans and more measurements. A week after this happens his helmet will be ready. We will have to go in every 2 to 3 weeks to measure progress and he will wear it 23 hours a day.

Thank you for being here for support ladies.

  • I am curious to hear more about this.  DD's pediatrician gave us a referral to a head specialist today.  One of my friend's told me that helmets aren't covered because it is considered cosmetic.  Is your insurance paying for everything?
  • @holly142 the way the specialist today was talking made it seem like his measurements are within the range that insurance will cover. I have been doing research since his first appointment and you can appeal their decision. One site says to make sure you are taking pictures of LO being repositioned in case you have to appeal. I will find the website I like and post it for you. Since they started the process we will find out if insurance covers it or not in a few days.
  • @holly142 its plagiosupport.org I found a lot on this site helpful. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. The specialist explained a lot today.
  • Hope everything runs smoothly and you get the helmet soon!!!

I'm glad that you found a good doctor. I hope that insurance will cover the costs for you and It works well for LO.

  • Good luck! I hope it's covered. Maybe the new doctor does this more often and they know how to code it so insurance will pay. Just curious why your precious doctor doesn't do helmets.. just not his area of expertise or doesn't believe in them?
  • @SarahA918 the nurse practitioner is the one that sent us to the specialist. I'm not sure why the specialist doctor stopped doing them. They called the day before his follow up appointment and cancelled because they don't do them anymore. Honestly I think its where there location is. They are located in a retirement community and see lots of elderlypatients and probably didn't get much use out of the equipment. That's my guess.
  • Glad you were able to get in. I'm pretty sure M is going to need one. The pedi told us we had to get referral from the PT, but the PT just kind of looked at me blankly when I asked about it yesterday. We've decided we want to do measurements now, then repeat in 1-2 months to see how he's progressing, unless the measurements are so bad now that there's good reason to start right away. I just want to have it on by six months if we're going to do it, since I've heard waiting later doesn't get the same results and takes a lot longer.

  • His measurements didn't change very much in a month. I've been trying everything with him. His specialist said that because of the numbers if he was the parent he would get the helmet. He also said that its up to me and we can measure again in a month. I decided to do it because he didn't progress as much as we had hoped.
  • The study also emphasized the results were only for moderate flattening. I think key is that there are negative side effects to the helmet that you need to consider and balance with the likelihood it will help.
  • I don't have any back story on your son's head. How soon after you brought concern to your doc/pedi did you have your appt with the helmet people?

We went to pedi a couple weeks ago about my son's flat head and he says he sees what we're talking about because it's quite flat, but said it would "probably" go back to normal once he's regularly rolling etc. H and I got the number for an Orthodics company that specializes in the helmets and we'll be checking them out. It's not covered here either, but "probably" isn't good enough for us... Particularly because of how mean kids can be! just wondering if you were ever told it would get better, or if your doc recommended the helmet?

  • @tootsscott the Dr recommended it. We sawa specialist a week after the ped referred us. Waited a month and saw the specialist again. His head is flat on the right side and his forehead has bossing so the right side sticks out and is bigger. It is slowly pulling his ear forward.

The specialist said it might get better on its own, but we feel that isn't good enough and would rather give the helmet a try. The specialist feels the same way.

I read the above article a few days ago and we have done our research and still feel that this is the best way to go.
  • Best of luck and hope it all works out for you and LO!

  • I'll look forward to your updates! Flat head is awful, so hopefully the helmet fixes it for you guys!

  • I hope everything goes smoothly for you. I have a friend whose little boy had great results from his helmet
  • My son has/had the same exact thing. Flattening on the right and forehead bulging. He is currently wearing his helmet. We got it 3 weeks ago and I am amazed at how fast his head is changing. I read that article as well and completely disagree. Looking at my sons head is proof that they work. Let me know if you have any questions a about it. We had a very easy transition into the helmet. DS didn't even know he was wearing it.
