Nightmare diaper changes

Anyone else experiencing these? Riley throws the WORST awful fits when I lay her down to change her diaper. She used to be content with listening to her music box or reading a book, but now nothing else works. Am I destined to just change her diaper standing up? That seems to be the only thing that works. Send me your trade secrets if you've got 'em.

Re: Nightmare diaper changes

  • I do diaper changes standing up if it is just pee now.  I take one off, give her a minute then put the other one on.  They are not always on perfectly but we have not had a leak yet. When we do have a poop I wrestle her onto the changing table. I usually do the change and wipe her up then get her down.  I let her wander/play for a minute before wrestling the diaper back on her. Breaking it up seems to help. So far we have not had any accidents without a diaper.

For some reason he only has meltdowns when it's a poopy diaper. Those are hell to change. Usually DH is home with me so he can hold Liam's legs for me while I clean up, but if he's not there then I just grit my teeth and do whatever it takes to make it out of there alive.Sometimes Liam and I end up sitting on the floor of his room after a poopy diaper change because we're both exhausted from what just went down.

@hijinx - i think diaper changing is a new category of exercise. Must burn at least 100 calories per change!

Diaper changes and wrestling them into their carseats definitely need to count as cardio.

We struggle with diaper changes also, I feel like a WWE wrestler sometimes.  I don't have any tips because I feel like all of our go-to options no longer work, but it's nice to know I'm not alone.

  • Ladies - thank you for the tips!! I am going to put together an entertainment basket to put next to the changing table - and try playing music or singing during the changes. Hopefully this phase passes for us all soon?!

@mrsrek10 - we do the changes almost all the time in her room, which has been fine up until recently. Maybe I need to install a TV on the ceiling!!

  • DS gave me an awful fight with the bedtime diaper/pajama change. The more pregnant I got, the harder things got for me. I finally gave up that change to DH. He doesn't give DH any problems with it!

  • Well....looks like nightmare diaper changes are happening nationwide. Ugh! These toddlers are giving us a run for our money. Who knew diaper changes would ever turn into an epic wrestling match?! Thanks everyone for your advice!

We went through this as well. Nothing worked to distract him. Not even my phone which normally did the trick. I just tried to go as fast as possible.
