bed transitions?

I'm six months pregnant with my next little one, which has me thinking about furniture and transitioning DS1 to a different bed.  Ideally he would switch to a new bed in about six months, when DS2 (to be born in August) would be ready to switch from a bassinet to the crib.  Is approx 22 months too early to consider moving DS1 to a twin mattress with rails?  I don't want to have to buy a second crib or a toddler bed, which would be used for a very short time.

Re: bed transitions?

  • DS's nursery is also the 'guest room' at the moment and I use the guest bed (a queen) to co-sleep with him most nights still. I'm 5 months pregnant with DD and have considered getting a rail for the queen and just letting DS sleep in it as his bed (since he likes it so much) and skipping the crib transition I've been attempting for months now.

I've seen other posters here who have their LOs in toddler beds already. With rails up and safe bedding....what's the difference between a toddler bed and a twin/queen? Mattress firmness?

I don't think so. I moved DS at exactly 24 months to get him used to his new bed before DD came and we never had an issue. He gets out of his bed more now almost 2 years later than he did then.

  • I have no experience with this and I plan on keeping my DD in a crib until she goes to college but my daycare lady just switched her 19 month old soon to a queen bed with a rail last month. They gated his doorway since he would sometimes get out and I know he has chosen some nights to sleep on the floor but the transition went well otherwise so it is definitely possible.

  • We transitioned DS at 14 months to a twin bed after he climbed out of his crib. We have the mattress and box spring on the floor, we'll add the frame when he's older. I put couch cushions on the floor for the first month in case he fell out but he only fell out the first 2 nights. Since then it's been fine, he mostly stays in bed or occasionally climbs out and walks around for a few and gets back in to bed (his door stays closed at night). So it's definitely possible, just depends on the kid. I know people who have had a lot of trouble with transitioning too early but it worked great for us.

Thanks for the advice, ladies!  I think we will probably try the mattress on the floor.  Will just have to figure out how to keep him in his room, since he can already open the door.

I do not plan on switching him until he shows signs of becoming an escape artist. Which I haven't seen him attempt even once....I know this can change overnight. But for now we are happy with the crib. Then we'll convert to the toddler bed and then we'll bring up his full size bed after that.
