Breastfeeding

Baby suddenly not latching

After 2 weeks of perfect latching, baby will suddenly not feed from me! She screamed and pushed my breast away for 1/2 an hour but then drank 4 oz of formula from a bottle. I had a really bad experience breastfeeding with my first child and I thought we were doing so well this time. Any ideas on how to get her back on the boob?

Re: Baby suddenly not latching

  • I'm a FTM, so not an expert here, but are you sure that she was hungry? I know you said she drank from a bottle, but I'm wondering if she wasn't really hungry to begin with? My DD did something like this a couple months ago, pushing me away, crying. After 5 hours of not eating during the day, I figured out she was gassy. Once I gave her some gas drops and bicycled her legs, she released the gas and we were able to nurse.

Make sure each time you give anything from a bottle that you pump to replace the feeding and signal your body to make milk.

The next time you go to nurse, try to stay very calm and if she doesn't latch, don't stress. She can sense it. I was able to get my DD to latch on her preferred side and then switch to the other side once I had my let down. Just keep trying to latch when she shows hunger signals. Good luck!

  • Are you able to pump a little milk to have on reserve if she is having trouble latching?  Any reason you offered formula?

My DS had a lot of issues with reflux, gas, etc. when he was very young and sometimes he would not want to eat for a period of time as PP suggested.  I would wait it out, try different positions (like side lying) and sometimes eventually I would give pumped milk in a bottle.  It was very temporary and he got back on track.

  • I only offered formula because that's what I had. She was pretty frantic and clearly hungry and making a bottle was quicker than pumping. It seems to have been a one time thing because she fed normally last night. Thanks for the advice, I'll keep it in mind in case this happens again.

Take deep breaths, offer boob frequently, and try different positions.  My LO was really gassy and hated nursing in a cradled position.  We would have to take frequent breaks to burp, bicycle and readjust.  Once he got bigger, it became a little easier.  GL!

It's much harder to nurse them when they are "really hungry", so maybe next time try offering her the boob much earlier. If you see your LO start to open and close his/her mouth, or stick their tongue out, start putting them on the boob. Don't wait until they are rooting or fussing. That helped me a lot with a successful EBF relationship with my first.
