Peanut Butter

How many of you ladies are doing peanut butter with your LO already? We have been holding off due to worrying about an allergic reaction or choking, but it seems like I have read that a lot of people on here are doing it already. How is it working out for you? Should I try it or wait? How did you introduce it?

(LO is just over 11 months.)

Re: Peanut Butter

  • C is eating it! I think I started him around 9 months? Just thinly spread on toast or in a sandwich. I use the no salt or sugar one from Kraft.

  • We started at around 8 months, once he was eating mostly solid foods and no pureed. In Canada they say it's okay to introduce at six months when you start solids though. We have had no issues at all LO loves peanut butter toast.

  • Just started a few weeks ago and C lovesssss it! I just make sure it's spread really thin! :)
  • Not sure when but she has pb sandwiches often, that's what I usually have. She did gag some at first, but she doesn't put as much in her mouth now and we make sure her drink is near by.

  • At his 9 mth appt the pedi said we could go ahead and try it b/c she hasn't seen convincing research that it makes any difference. He's had it a few times and has been fine. That being said we have no peanut allergies on either side so I wasn't too concerned.

  • A loves it! I gave it to her around nine months. No reaction.

We started trying almost as soon as we introduced solids around 6 months. I have read some research that may point to the fact that intorducing before 8 or 9 months is better to ensure no allergies. We have no history of allergies in the family, so I felt fairly safe doing it early. Speaking of that, I introduced all the allergens I could think of around that time as well.

  • We gave it to her around 7 months. The first day we only let her have a little bit on a spoon and watched her very carefully. After that we started giving it to her on bread. Never had a problem with her gagging on it. We also buy a PB where the only ingredient is peanuts.

We have given him pb. I just made sure DH was home the first time he had it just in case. He likes it but doesn't seem crazy about it.

Eta: I have a hard time getting LO to eat protein (not really interested in meat) so sometimes I stir a spoonful of pb into his banana yogurt. He likes that a lot.

  • We started recently.  B likes it.  We had a pedi appointment when B was about 10 months and asked about it then and she said go for it.  We have no family history of allergy, so she was not worried at all about us trying it out. We just give a really thin layer on toast.

  • I haven't yet, but I plan to buy some this weekend when I go grocery shopping. PB is not something DH or I usually eat, and I'm not sure why, because we both love it.

  • We haven't and I'm not sure when we will since I have a peanut allergy myself. However, I eat sunbutter and we've given her that - she loves it! We've spread it on mum mums and put it in her oatmeal and yogurt.

  • We haven't because about a month and a half ago he had a reaction to something.  We think it was from bread he had that had a lot of tree nut ingredients.  Even though peanuts and tree nuts aren't the same allergy, the pediatrician's office strongly suggested we avoid both peanuts and tree nuts until his 1 year appointment so we can discuss it and make a plan.

  • We tried it last week on his toast and he preferred his butter toast over it. But no reaction.

    This exactly
  • We introduced it around 9 months (or 10). He loves it on bread. I just make sure it's a very thin smear and so far no gagging issues.

Of course daycare is peanut free, so he gets sun nut butter for there, but fortunately he seems to love both.

  • I gave her a lick about a few weeks ago, the other day I gave her a half a sandwhich of peanut butter. She loved it. I get the allergy aspect of it- my nephew is anaphylactic to nuts, and a bunch of other things. We were worried with allergies too, but it seems like she's OK with everything. Only do it when your comfortable. No rush.

  • I gave Hudson a PB&J about two days ago. He ate the whole sandwhich (little piggy!). No reaction. I wasn't too worried because DH & I have zero food allergies.

We tried it Easter weekend.  He got hives on the back of his neck :((  I'm really hoping he grows out of it at some point.  Peanut butter is basically a food group for me.
    Fingers crossed for you!

    Thanks for all the responses!
  • I haven't and I won't give it til he one but he has other allergies so I try not give him the top allergies til he is one. We also live an hour away from a hospital so I'm not going to chance anything right now.

  • @Sympkin‌ Rolling pin? Freaking GENIUS! Do you roll the whole sandwich or just the bread and then add the filling? I try to get a lot of filling in DD's sandwiches so she's not filling up on just bread i feel like rolling it once filled would mean filling spilling out everywhere.

@araziza I do the rolling pin trick too. You make the sandwich and then roll it out. It's so much less messy for LO to eat. I have never had anything squirt out.
  • He got a bite of a pb cookie and had hives a month or so ago. I thought it was something else he had eaten until the below happened within minutes of eating the edge of my English muffin that had literally a drop of Pb on it. That happened this morning. I'll be talking with his pedi at the end of the month and I'm assuming we will be sent for allergy testing :(imageimage

Thanks :( I felt so bad for him, he was soooooo itchy. It faded about an hour or so later. He hasn't had any other reactions to food so it was a surprise.

  • We havent tried peanut butter yet but speaking of allergies, anyone else's LO get little red bumps after eating strawberries or tomatoes? Mine does. They dont seem to bother her and they go away after a few minutes or so but Im wondering if its like a sensitivity?

Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Oh. Should specify that only show up around her mouth.

  • I honestly don't even know why I am waiting since that's pretty much what I ate throughout pregnancy. I will ask pedi about it just to make sure, but I was thinking after she turned 1. With DS, we waited until he was 2, but I was much more paranoid with him. ;)

  • We do peanut butter almost every day on toast. She first tried it around 8 months, I think. She loves it. She also will take it on a spoon. No gagging issues. She loves food...

  • I waited until 2 with DS and will with DD as well. I'm not a big follower of "food rules" but I do hold off on PB and honey.
