Used Nursery Furniture?

We are considering purchasing used baby furniture (crib, changing table and dresser) and wanted to get opinions. We would only buy solid wood, ensure we have brand and collection to ensure no recalls or known issues and would thoroughly inspect before purchasing. Then would of course disinfect and ensure clean for our bundle. :) Seems you can get very nice sets in excellent condition which are premium beands for less than the "cheaper" brands in store. We feel that this would pose less risk than a less expensive/low quality new set. Thoughts?

  • Sounds like you have your mind made up! As long as it's safe and clean I don't see any reason not to.

  •  Me personally...I love second hand stuff and think the idea of nice solid wood is great, but for the crib itself I would buy new. You can get them pretty cheap and then you dont' have to worry if it is current as far as safety. The other stuff I think is fine to buy used and you will use the dresser for 18 years at least.

But if you check for recalls and all it's probably fine. I'm just paranoid because my old (21) crib is all recalled and stuff and my kids insist I get a new one for our late-in-life princess. So I'm getting an Ikea one that matches our bedroom close enough (where it will be for some time).
  • Go for it!  As long as there are no recalls and it looks good.  I see no reason not to.

  • Just an FYI you can get kits that update some drop side cribs just be sure to contact the company to make sure you can get it before you pick up the set. Also you can get a new mattress pretty cheap at places like Amazon or Walmart.com.

  • I would totally get used and in fact I will be getting a used crib for #2 since we're not planning to move #1 to a big kid bed any time soon. I am planning to get as cheap of a non-convertible crib i can find for that purpose (But obviously a non-junky one). I don't understand why people spend hundreds upon hundreds on cribs etc...
  • You can obviously inspect the crib to ensure there are no missing screws or parts with the manual.  Just check for holes where a screw is supposed to be.  Cribs are not that difficult, especially non-drop side ones.

Just because there's a screw in the hole doesn't mean it's the correct screw. A quarter of an inch size difference could mean a huge difference in sturdiness.

Well obviously if the crib does not seem sturdy, don't buy it.

We bought a used (vintage) dresser for dd and I see no issue with that, but like PPs have stated I wouldn't buy a used crib. You can get a good quality new crib for $100ish.

  • We bought our crib used.  It was a $400 crib, purchased for $130, and it was used for 18 months by one child.  We spent a lot on the rest of DDs furniture and I'm glad we went the used route for the crib since it is basically a throw away now that she is done with it.

As for safety....I used my common sense.  No drop side, not wobbly.  I'm sure some mom could tell horror stories of used cribs but we inspected this one and it has been perfectly fine.  (I did pas on a free drop side crib our friend offered us even though she said that I could get the kit to fix it so I'm not totally un-paranoid, I guess)

This. It's furniture, not rocket science. Used is fine as long as it meets current safety standards and isn't wobbly.
